Swedish mezzo soprano Ylva Gruen holds a master's degree in opera performance from the Sibelius Academy in Helsinki, Finland. Previous studies include Stockholm Opera Studio and the College of Music in Piteå, Sweden. At the Sibelius Academy she has performed the roles of Cherubino (Le Nozze di Figaro), Hänsel (Hänsel und Gretel), Hermia (A Midsummer Night's Dream) and Meg Page (Falstaff). In addition to opera, Gruen is a keen performer of both lied and oratorio music. She has appeared as a soloist with, among others, the Finnish Baroque Orchestra (Vivaldi: Juditha Triumphans, as Abra and Ozias), Norrbotten Chamber Orchestra (Beethoven: Choral phantasy) and Helsinki Sinfonietta (Gala concert, Carmen and Mallika). She also has a strong passion for contemporary music and has taken part of several world premieres, in both operatic and non-operatic pieces. 
Highlights from the season 17/18 are Kate in Puccini's Madama Butterfly, Truth in Handel's oratorio The Triumph of Time and Truth, and a gala concert with the Tapiola Sinfonietta together with the opera class of Sibelius Academy. During spring and summer 2019 she will join Garsington Opera Festival as a member of the Alvarez Young Artist Programme.
Among the roles that Gruen has studied musically are Rosina (Il Barbiere di Siviglia), Romeo (I Capuleti e I Montecchi) and Wellgunde (Das Rheingold and Götterdämmerung).
In addition to her vocal studies, Gruen also holds a degree in chamber music with clarinet as her major from Mälardalen College in Sweden.
