Tomasz Konina (born in 1972, theatre and opera director and stage designer) Graduate of the National Academy of Dramatic Art&nbspin Warsaw (1996) and the University of Economics in Wrocław (2013). In 2002 he was granted the scholarship of Vilar Young Artists Programme at the Royal Opera House Covent Garden in London. He made his début in 1998 at the Athenaeum Theatre (Teatr Ateneum) in Warsaw where he directed Chekhov's Uncle Vanya, which was acclaimed „one of the most interesting developments of this stage for a few years” („Rzeczpospolita” newspaper). His directorial opera début, Mozart’s Marriage of Figaro at the Wrocław Opera (1998), was very highly praised by audiences and critics alike.  His subsequent achievements are Rossini's Tancredi at the Grand Theatre – Polish National Opera in Warsaw (Teatr Wielki – Opera Narodowa, 2000), Suassuna's A dog’s Will at the Cyprian Kamil Norwid Theatre in Jelenia Góra (2001), Boito's Mefistophele at the Opera Nova in Bydgoszcz (2001), Beethoven's Fidelio at the Grand Theatre in Poznań (2002), Cilea's Adriana Lecouvreur at the Grand Theatre in Łódź (2004), Verdi’s Macbeth at the Grand Theatre in Łódź (2005), The Merry Widow by Lehar at the Music Theatre in Łódź (2005), Verdi’s La Traviata at the Wrocław Opera (2006), To be like Callas (2007) at the Music Theatre in Lódź, Verdi’s Falstaff at the Grand Theatre in Poznań (2013), Andersen's The Snow Queen at the Opole Theatre (2013) and Teatr Polski in Warsaw (2014), Boito's Mefistofele at the Opera Krakowska (2014), J. Strauss' Der Zigeunerbaron at the Grand Theatre in Łódź (2015) and Boito's Mefistofele at the Trondheim Symphony Orchestra Musikkteatrer (2015). He directed many plays which had never been staged in Poland before, such as Debussy’s Pelléas and Mélisande at the Grand Theatre – Polish National Opera in Warsaw (2002), Journey to Reims by Rossini at the Grand Theatre – Polish National Opera in Warsaw (2003), Ullmann’s The Emperor of Atlantis in Warsaw Chamber Opera (2005), Bernstein’s Candide at the Grand Theatre in Łódź (2005), The Lovers From the Valldemosa Monastery by Ptaszyńska at the Grand Theatre in Łódź (2010). He worked with such distinguished artists as: Alberto Zedda, Ewa Podleś, Tadeusz Kozłowski, Olga Pasiecznik, Aleksandra Kurzak, Krzysztof Jabłoński, Ewa Michnik, Wojciech Michniewski, Tadeusz Strugała, Kai Bumann, Zofia de Ines, Boris F. Kudlička, Joanna Klimas, Rafał Olbiński, Rockwell Blake, e.a. Since 2001, he has also designed the scenery for his shows. From 2007 to 2015 he has been the artistic and executive director of the Opole Theatre, where, among others, he directed Schimmelphennig's For a Better World, Chekhov’s The Cherry Orchard, The Idiot by Dostoevsky, The Maids of Wilko by Iwaszkiewicz, The Lady of the Camellias by Dumas and The Lion, The Witch and The Wardrobe by C.S.Lewis. As a manager, he initiated cooperation with a number of important theatre festivals: The Globe Theatre in London, Seoul Performing Arts Festival in Korea, Tbilisi International Festival of Theatre in Georgia, LaMaMa Theatre in New York, The Studio Players in Istanbul, Teatr International Festival Minsk in Belarus, Istanbul Theatre Festival in Turkey, Uijeongbu International Music Theatre Festival in Korea, Eurothalia Theatre Festival Timisoara in Romania and has enabled many theatrical débuts for people who have later become recognised artists, such as Krzysztof Garbaczewski, Paweł Świątek and Jędrzej Piaskowski.
