Tenor Thomas Ruud was born in Oslo, Norway, and has been a regular guest of  many of Europe's leading opera houses for more than two decades since his debut at the Norwegian National Opera in 1994. Although he established himself internationally as a lyric tenor, over the last decade he has taken on increasingly dramatic roles, both from the Italian and French spinto repertoire, such as Cavaradossi in Puccini's Tosca, Don Jose in Bizet's Carmen, Pollione in Bellini's Norma, Hoffmann in Offenbach's Les contes d'Hoffmann, begun to take on roles from the dramatic German repertoire. The current season marks his debut in the German drmatic Fach as Bacchus in Strauss' Ariadne auf Naxos  with the Nordnorsk Opera in Norway. Erik in Wagner's Der fliegende Holländer  and the title role in Lohengrin are both in preparation.

Other roles of the lyric Fach in Mr. Ruud's repertoire include Pinkerton in Puccini's Madama Butterfly, Count Ivrea in Verdi's Un giorno di regno, Rodolfo in Puccini's La Bohème, Steva Burya in Janacek's Jenufa, amongst many others. Thomas Ruud has been a guest of some of the most important opera houses in Germany, such as the Staatsoper Stuttgart, and the Staatsoper Hannover.  Mr. Ruud has worked with conductors such as Patrick Fournillier, Timo Handschuh, Andreas Schüller, Christian Lindberg, Peter Szilvay, Eivind Gullberg Jensen and Kjell Seim, and with stage directors such as Dietrich Hilsdorf, Calixto Bieito, Enrique Mazzola, Lisa Kent and Ronald Rørvik.

Thomas Ruud is also very much in demand on the concert stage. In June 2011 Thomas sang in a gala concert together with the legendary soprano Kiri Te Kanawa. His oratorio repertoire includes Verdi's Requiem, which he sang in Nidarosdomen, Trondheim, conducted by Eivind Gullberg Jensen, and which he will reprise in the fall of 2017 in Norway, and Dvorak's Die Geisterbraut  which he performed to great acclaim in Nürnberg and Darmstadt. Upcoming engagements include Puccini's Messa di Gloria in Singapore.

Mr. Ruud received his music training at the Academy of Operatic Art in Oslo, and the University of the Pacific in California, USA. He currently lives in Berlin, and freelances as a soloist throughout the world, including the USA, Mexico and New Zealand.
