Bio

Tajana Raj, born in Nueremberg Germany, studied at Hochschule fuer Musik Wuerzburg (Germany) under Prof. Leandra Overmann where she earned a diploma in both, concert und operatic performance as well as in music pedagogy. Still as a student Ms. Raj appeared several times at the State Opera in Hannover first with smaller parts like in Luigi Nono's "Al gran sole carico d‘amore" a production of Peter Konwitschny and the conductor Johannes Harneit, in a concert opera preformance of F. Cilea's “Adriana Lecouvreur“ as Mde. Dangeville (conductor Mikel Kütson) and in Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart's "The Magic Flute" as Second Lady. After just one season Tajana Raj, back than a Mezzosoprano,  began to sing major roles like as Lucio Cinna in Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart’s "Lucio Silla", as well as Bradamante in Georg Friedrich Haendel's  "Alcina", which she also sang at Komische Oper Berlin in a production of David Alden and under the conducter Paul McCreesh.  Upon graduating after four years, she was hired by one of the most importent German theaters. The State Opera Stuttgart, hired the young Tajana Raj, where she has been a permanent member from season 2006/07 – 2010/11. First she sung smaller roles like Flora in G. Verdi’s “La Traviata“, Barena in L. Janacek’s “Jenufa“, 1. Magd in R. Strauß “Elektra“, Mercedes in G. Bizet’s “Carmen“ and Emilia in G. Verdi's “Otello“. Middle parts like Cherubino in W. A. Mozart's “Le nozze di Figaro“, Suzuki in G. Puccini's “Madama Butterfly“, Olga in Tschaikowski’s “Eugen Onegin“ and the main role Hänsel in
E. Humperdinck's “Hänsel und Gretel“ followed in the next seasons. The highlights were leading roles like Carmen in G. Bizet's “Carmen“, Idamante in W. A. Mozart's “Idomeneo“ and the title role Judith in A. Vivaldi’s “Judita triumphans“ at the Salzburg Festival. Amongst others Tajana Raj has worked in productions by Calixto Bieito, Peter Konwitschny, Herbert Wernicke, Sebastian Nuebling, Martin Kusej, Nigel Lowery, Ruth Berghaus and Monique Wagemakers. Her musical experiences have included conductors such as Patrick Fournillier, Manfred Honeck, Marc Soustrot, Michael Schoenwandt, Roman Brogli-Sacher, Srba Dinic, Julia Jones, Enrique Mazzola, Timo Handschuh, Marc Piollet, Jongbae Jee, Andres Orozco-Estrada and Dan Ettinger. Furthermore she sung at Salzburger Festival, Komische Oper Berlin, Oper Leipzig, Nationaltheater Mannheim, Volkstheater Rostock, Theater Ulm, Staatsoper Hannover, Oper Stuttgart, Nationaltheater Zagreb and at the renowned International Festival Edinburgh. As a highly acclaimed concert singer, she performed in the Liederhalle Stuttgart W. A. Mozart’s “Mozart Requiem“ and L. Janacek’s “Glagolitische Messe“ under Michael Schönwandt. This year she will sing G. Verdi’s “Requiem“ as well as A. Bruckner’s “Te Deum“.  Especially in the last years the soprano Tajana Raj devoted herself to singing ’Lied’ and concerts. She sung not only in Germany but in Croatia, Serbia, England, France, Swiss and Spain. The label Kairos Verlag produced the CD “Die Geisterinsel“ by M. Tsao. A contemporary opera where Tajana Raj sung the leading role Miranda. The world premiere was performed in Stuttgart in 2011.In November 2015 follwed the second part “Mirandas Atemwende“ by M. Tsao. The world premiere was in Berlin and the CD production at the Teldec Studios Berlin. Tajana Raj sung also the main part Miranda. After the engagement in Stuttgart, where she sung so called trousers roles like Idamante in Mozart's „Idomeneo“, Hänsel in Humperdinck's „Hänsel und Gretel“ and Cherubino in Mozart's „Le nozze di Figaro“ it became obvious, especially during the work on parts in the ’Zwischenfach’ like Idamante in W. A. Mozart’s „Idomeneo“ and Komponist in R. Strauß „Ariadne auf Naxos“, to change the ‚Fach’. In the last year Tajana Raj worked very intensive with her coach Tobias Truniger on the change to spinto soprano.
