Bio

Bass Stephan Kirchgraber began his career at the Greater Miami Opera (now the Florida Grand Opera) after studies at the University of Illinois, and in Munich, Germany with Prof. Hans Hotter. He made his professional debut with the south Florida company in 'La Gioconda', and has returned there for principal bass roles in 'Macbeth' (Banco), 'Norma' (Oroveso), 'Turandot' (Timur), and the American premiere of the final version of Franchetti's 'Cristoforo Colombo' (Bobadilla). Mr. Kirchgraber's most recents successes include his debut in the role of Zaccaria ('Nabucco') for Opera Theater of Montclair, Ramphis ('Aida') for Lyric Artists of New York as a benefit for Doctors without Borders and Daland (Der Fliegende Hollaender) with the United Nations Orchestra. Upcoming performances include the role of  Malcom, Re di Scozia in the belcanto rarity and American premiere of 'Malvina di Scozia' by Giovanni Pacini. In recently seasons, Mr. Kirchgraber appeared with the Phoenicia Festival of the Voice as the Bass soloist in Verdi’s ‘Requiem’ as well as Monterrone in ‘Rigoletto’, and as Pistola in 'Falstaff'.  He made his debut as Rocco in 'Fidelio' for the Shippensburg Music Festival and, as Hunding in 'Die Walkuere' for the Wagner Festival Orchestra New York under the baton of David Gilbert as well as Fasolt in 'Das Rhinegold' for the Liederkranz Foundation.  He has also toured with Teatro Lirico d' Europa as Don Basilio in 'Barbiere di Siviglia', Colline in 'La Boheme', Ramphis in 'Aida' and Angelotti in 'Tosca' and had a phenomenal success with the Bass solo in Rossini's 'Stabat Mater' for Gateway Musical Society Orchestra.   He has appeared with Opera de Puerto Rico in productions of 'Aida' (Il Re) and 'Gianni Schicchi' and in concert, for Culturarte de Puerto Rico in 'Andrea Chenier' starring Ben Heppner, a performance which was released on DVD. He appeared frequently with Opera Tampa in productions of 'Il Trovatore' (Ferrando), 'La Bohème' (Colline), 'Lucia di Lammermoor' (Raimondo), 'La Fanciulla del West' (Ashby) and 'Il Barbiere di Siviglia' (Don Basilio) and Tosca (Angelotti). He joined the Todi Music Fest USA for its inaugural North American season as Ramphis in 'Aida', and returned for Geronte in 'Manon Lescaut'. Mr. Kirchgraber made his European operatic debut in 'Die Meistersinger' at the Festival dei due Mondi in Spoleto, Italy, and has also appeared at the Opernhaus Zurich as the Nazarener in 'Salome'. He also toured with the New York City Opera National Company, visiting over 70 cities throughout the United States as Colline in 'La Boheme', and in two different productions of 'La Traviata', as Baron Douphol, and as Dr. Grenville.  He created roles in the world premieres of 'The Woodlanders' by Stephen Paulus and 'Joruri' by Minoru Miki for Opera Theatre of St. Louis. Mr. Kirchgraber later traveled to Tokyo for 'Joruri's' Japanese premiere at the Nissei Theatre, a performance that has been released on videodisc. Mr. Kirchgraber has sung critically acclaimed performances as the four Villains in 'Les Contes D'Hoffmann', Prince Gremin in 'Eugene Onegin' and Daland in 'Der Fliegende Hollander' with Opera DELAWARE, as Wurm in 'Luisa Miller' for the Sarasota Opera, and in productions of 'La Fanciulla del West' and 'Street Scene' for the Central City Opera.  For the Connecticut Opera, Mr. Kirchgraber has appeared in 'Aida' (Il Re), 'Il Trovatore' (Ferrando), 'Salome' (Nazerener), 'Die Zauberflöte' (Der Sprecher), 'Carmen' (Zuniga) and 'Il Tabarro' (Talpa). He has sung with the Utah Opera in productions of 'La Fanciulla del West' (Ashby), 'Salome' (5te Jude), 'Un Ballo in Maschera' (Samuele) and 'Otello' (Lodovico). Other North American appearances include performances with the Augusta, Baltimore, New Orleans, Orlando, Palm Beach and Pittsburgh opera companies. Mr. Kirchgraber is a past recipient of the Robert M. Lauch Memorial Grant presented by the Wagner Society of New York, under whose auspices he made his New York recital debut.
