Bio

The Icelandic/Norwegian soprano singer, Steinunn Soffía Skjenstad, started her musical studies in Reykjavík, Iceland and graduated from the Icelandic Academy of Arts before venturing to the Sibelius Academy in Helsinki, Finland for further studies. From 2008-2012 Steinunn studied at the Hamburg University of Music and Theatre where she specialized in singing German lieder in addition to being a member of the opera class. 2012-2015 Steinunn sang at Theater in Lübeck in Northern Germany as a soloist where she has worked with directors such as Dieter Kaegi, Michael Wallner, Anthony Pilavachi and Reto Nickler. Along her studies and career Steinunn has frequented various master classes and taken private lessons with artists such as Margreet Honig, Julius Drake, Hartmut Höll, Ralf Gothóni, Elly Ameling, Helmut Deutsch and Axel Bauni. Since her years in Finland, Steinunn's passion for singing lieder has led her giving recitals throughout Europe and brought her prizes such as the 1st prize at Erkki Melartin Chamber Music Competition, Finland and the 3rd prize at The International Joseph Suder Competition in Nuermberg, Germany. Furthermore, Steinunn recieved the 1st prize in Elise Meyer Competition and the 3rd prize in The Mozart Competition, both in Hamburg. Additionally, she was a scholar of the Wagner Society Hamburg in 2012 and has been granted scholarships by Hermann and Milena Foundation in Hamburg, Halldór Hansen's Memorial Foundation in Iceland and Selim Eskilin Foundation in Finland. In 2012 Steinunn's first CD "Ostseetage - Eine Liederreise durch den Ostseeraum" (Baltic Days - A musical journey through the Baltic Sea Area) was released. There she sings song from the Scandinavian and Baltic area states together with the German mezzo soprano Judith Thielsen and the Bulgarian pianist Mariana Popova.
