Bio



Sonja Maria Westermann studied with professors Ingrid Haubold and Leandra Overmann at the mu- sic colleges in Karlsruhe and Würzburg, and after- wards with Beatrice Bianco in Bologna. She atten- ded master classes of Cheryl Studer, Laurence Dale, Gianluca Zampieri and Maris Skuja.

She was a finalist in the International Singing Competition Passau 2011 and in 2016 of the Elizabeth Connell Prize for aspiring dramatic sopranos. 

In 2013 she made her debut as Fiordiligi in COSÌ FAN TUTTE, followed by Rosalinde in DIE FLEDERMAUS at the Castle Festival Zwingenberg.

Numerous engagements followed in which she sang central roles of her fach such as: MARGUERITE in Gounod's FAUST, Contessa di Almaviva in LE NOZZE DI FIGARO, Verdi’s LUSIA MILLER (for which she got very good reviews by operatic press and public and was interviewed by the opera magazine ORPHEUS), Kurfürstin in Zeller’s DER VOGELHÄNDLER, again ROSALINDE, Leo Fall’s MADAME POMPADOUR, Carlotta in Millöcker’s GASPARONE and Evelyne Valera in Raymond’s MASKE IN BLAU at the theaters of Hof, Plauen-Zwickau and Staatsoperette Dresden.

She was engaged as Helmwige in DIE WALKÜRE in the Tyrolean Festival in Erl under Gustav Kuhn and covered at the Baden State Theatre Karlsruhe the title role in VERLOBUNG IM TRAUM by Hans Krása.
She was heard as Third Norn and Woglinde in DIE GÖTTERDÄMMERUNG in Leipzig under the direction of David Timm as well as in BEETHOVEN'S 9TH SINFONIE at the Gewandhaus in Leipzig and VERDI's REQUIEM in the St. Thomas Church.


In 2017 she held the scholarship of the Association Richard Wagner. She debuted in concert DESDEMONA in Verdi’s Otello in Rome and studied new roles of the spinto repertoire as well as Sieglinde, Puccini’s Manon Lescaut, Agathe or Strauss’ Ariadne.

In 2018 she is on tour with several concert and recital programs and will be heard as Contessa di Almaviva as well as Erste Dame in Mozart’s MAGIC FLUTE at State Operetta Dresden. She debuts Strauss’ 4 LAST SONGS in concert in Regensburg and sings again Verdi’s REQUIEM in Leipzig.
