American contralto, Sharmay Musacchio recently made her debut with The New York City Opera as Mrs.Grose in their production of The Turn of the Screw. Anthony Tommasini of the New York Times, writes~"The rich-voiced contralto, Sharmay Musacchio is wonderful as the well-meaning, baffled and finally desperate housekeeper, Mrs.Grose.” James Jorden of the New York Post, writes “Sharmay Musacchio’s firm contralto helped ground Mrs.Grose, the clueless housekeeper.” In 2017, Ms.Musacchio will be La Voix in "The Tales of Hoffmann" under the baton of Placido Domingo, with Diana Damrau and the Los Angeles Opera. Ms.Musacchio has recently been featured as La zia Principessa and Zita with Opera Southwest. Where she received praise for her “Most impressive booming alto voice as Zita and does so again as the steely toned Principessa.” Ms.Musacchio also made her Los Angeles Opera debut as the Maiden in their production of “Rise and Fall of the City of Mahagonny”, which won two Grammies. Ms.Musacchio was the cover for Denyce Graves in Los Angeles Opera’s production of “Grendel”, starring Eric Owens and directed by Julie Taymor. Currently Ms.Musacchio is singing the role of the Daughter in Akhnaten by Philip Glass with the Los Angeles Opera. Ms.Musacchio’s concert work includes her Carnegie Hall debut as the alto soloist in Vivaldi’s “Gloria” with the New England Symphonic Ensemble. She recently debuted as Maria with Musica Vitale in their production of Respighi’s “Laud to the Nativity.” Ms.Musacchio was the alto soloist in the San Diego Chamber Orchestra’s presentation of Handel’s “Messiah.”Upcoming engagements include: La zia Principessa "Suor Angelica" with the San Diego Opera&San Diego Symphony in November 2014, Debuting the role of Eunice Hubbell in Previn's "A streetcar named desire" with the Townsend Opera and Fresno Grand Opera in January and February of 2015. Ms.Musacchio recently debuted the role of the Mother in Martinu's opera "The Tears of the Knife" with the San Diego International Fringe Festival to critical acclaim. Ms.Musacchio is looking forward to debuting Dame Quickly in Verdi's "Falstaff" with Pacific Opera Project in September of 2015 and Dame Carruthers in Gilbert and Sullivan's "Yeomen of the Guard" with Winter Opera St.Louis in October of 2015. In 2016 Ms.Musacchio recently debuted the role of the Duchess of Plaza Toro with Bodhi Tree Concerts, the Alto Soloist in Beethoven 9 with the Peninsula Symphony of San Francisco, and is now in production with the Los Angeles Opera singing the role of the Daughter in Akhnaten by Philip Glass. In 2017, Ms.Musacchio covers the role of Herodias in "Salome" with Los Angeles Opera, and will appear as La Voix in "The Tales of Hoffmann" under the baton of Placido Domingo with the Los Angeles Opera.In previous season’s, Ms.Musacchio has performed as a soloist with: New York City Opera, San Diego Opera, Fresno Grand Opera, Townsend Opera, Los Angeles Opera, Opera Southwest, Sarasota Opera, San Diego Chamber Orchestra, New England Symphonic Ensemble at Carnegie Hall, Portland Opera/IVAI, California Opera Association, and the San Francisco Conservatory Opera Theatre in conjunction with the San Francisco Opera.Ms.Musacchio has worked with renowned conductors and directors: James Conlon, Julie Taymor, Steven Sloane, John Doyle, Jayce Ogren, Sam Buntrock, Brad Dalton, Victor De Renzi, William Yannuzzi, Kevin Murphy, Dean Rhodus and Martin Wright.Ms.Musacchio has won various awards, including: Sarasota Young Artist Apprenticeship, Portland Opera/IVAI Young Artist Apprenticeship, regional finalist Zachary Vocal Competition, and the Grand Prize winner- Art Songs of the Americas.Ms.Musacchio holds two degrees from the San Francisco Conservatory of Music, where she studied with renowned Mezzo Soprano and Stanford Voice Lecturer- Wendy Hillhouse.
