Amadeus Online (2019)

Sara Caneva, born 1991, graduated with distinction in Composition, Piano and Orchestral Conducting respectively at the Rome “S. Cecilia” and Milan “G. Verdi” Conservatoires. In 2015 she got the Erasmus scholarship as visiting student in Orchestral Conducting at the Musikhochschule Stuttgart. Immediately after, she won as composer the “Fabbrica Y.A.P.” international competition at the Teatro dell’Opera di Roma, with the commission of a new opera, in the seasons 2016 and 2017. In the same Theatre, her work was premiered in October 2017, as part of the diptych On-Off/She staged under her baton.

She has been invited as composer in residence by institutions like Styria-Artist-in-Residence (Graz 2019), Bogliasco Study Center (2019), Schleswig-Holsteinisches Künstlerhaus Otte1 (Eckernförde 2018), Residencia de Estudiantes (Madrid 2017). Her music has been commissioned by Teatro dell’Opera di Roma, Teatro La Fenice di Venezia, Fondazione I Teatri di Reggio Emilia, CROSSROADS Festival Salzburg Mozarteum, Residencia de Estudiantes, and performed by soloists and chamber groups such as the Neue Vocalsolisten Stuttgart, Schallfeld Ensemble, Mdi Ensemble, PMCE, Dèdalo Ensemble, Moscow Contemporary Music Ensemble (Moscow Philharmonic Chamber Hall), NAMES Ensemble, NYKY Ensemble (Musiikkitalo Camerata Helsinki). She composed for several instrumental and vocal line-ups, showing a clear inclination towards the theatrical aspects, exploring also video, dance and site-specific situations.
She went in depth with her training both in Composition and Conducting at the Accademia Musicale Chigiana, Scuola Civica “C. Abbado” Milan, Tchaikovsky Academy for Composers, Impuls Academy, Peter Eötvös Foundation. In 2016 she was selected through the call for scores “Live!” launched by Mdi Ensemble, and winner of the “movin’up” competition, supported by G.A.I. and MiBACT, for funding projects by Italian artists abroad. As orchestral conductor she collaborated with the Youth Orchestra from Teatro dell’Opera di Roma, Danubia Orchestra Óbuda at the Budapest Music Center, Ensemble ‘900 from Accademia di Santa Cecilia, the IEMA within the Festival Klangspuren Schwaz, and the Festival Pontino – International encounters for Contemporary Music. In December 2018, she is the conductor of the final round in the “Michele Novaro” composition competition, taking place at the Quirinale and live broadcasted on Rai Radio3.
At the same time, she works on Ear Ride, an independent research project focused on sound ecology, also thanks to the support of Bogliasco Foundation. As part of her project she is committed to the diffusion of listening awareness, and guides groups of listeners through soundwalks.
