Cellist Samuel Magill is known throughout the U.S. for unearthing forgotten masterpieces of the solo cello repertory as well as that of chamber music. In addition, he has performed all the standard cello concertos and recital works all over the U.S., Japan, France and Belgium. His performance of the Schumann Concerto in Suntory Hall in Tokyo was recorded by Panasonic. Panasonic also recorded his live performances of Tchaikovsky's Rococo Variations in Kioi Hall, Tokyo, and the Dohnanyi Konzerstuck in Osaka's Izumi Hall. Magill has twice been a soloist in Lincoln Center's Alice Tully Hall, playing The D Major Concerto by Haydn and the Double Concerto of Brahms.    The first and only cellist to record the 1945 Cello Concerto by Vernon Duke, this Naxos CD was called "flat-out magnificent" by The American Record Guide. Mr. Magill's world premiere CD of Franco Alfano's Cello Sonata was hailed for its "razor edged precision" by Fanfare. A member of the New York Piano Quartet, their recent CD of Korngold's Suite and Marx's Rhapsodie was featured in Gramophone Magazine with a half page photo with the caption "The New York Piano Quartet offer ultra-impassioned, vivedly detailed performances of Korngold and Marx." Samuel Magill is a tenured member of the Metropolitan Opera Orchestra in New York. He was for seven years the Associate Principal Cellist of that orchestra and as such he led the cello section on numerous occasions and Saturday broadcasts. He is also a founding member of the Elysian Ensemble, a Flute, Cello and Harp Trio. Mr. Magill has transcribed the viola part of the Debussy Trio Sonata for cello and they have performed this unusual arrangement many times. They also perform the Trios by Riegger, Lajtha, Jongen and Jolivet. They gave their Weill Recital Hall debut in 1997. Strings Magazine called them "masters of their instruments." Mr. Magill is a native of North Carolina and was educated at the Peabody Institute and Rice University. He was a pupil of the late Zara Nelsova.
