Rupert Bergmann - Resume Spring 2018


Rupert Bergmann, bass-baritone was born in Graz, Austria. He studied at the Graz Academy of Music, and attended master classes in Germany and Vienna working with teachers Roberta Knie, Wicus Slabbert, Walter Berry and Ruth Berghaus. In 1990 he made his professional debut at the Graz Opera House.While living in Vienna, Rupert has appeared with many Viennese opera companies including the Wiener Volksoper, Theater an der Wien, Wiener Kammeroper and Neue Oper Wien.


He has also performed at many festivals and touring productions in Europe, Canada, Puerto Rico, Chile, Japan, and in the US.He worked with stage directors Ruth Berghaus, Christian Boesch, Philipp Harnoncourt, Robert Herzl, Kasper Holten, Peter Konwitschny, Gernot Kranner, Christof Loy, Marco Arturo Marelli, Leonard Prinsloo, Dolores Schmidinger and Michael Sturminger and conductors Marc Albrecht, Dan Ettinger, Milan Horvat, Alexander Joel, and Uwe Theimer.

Rupert has sung a wide variety of operatic roles ranging from Kurwenal in Wagner' Tristan and Peter Besenbinder in Humperdink's Hänsel und Gretel to the title roles in the contemporary operas Wozzeck by Berg and Punch and Judy by Birtwistle. He has participated is many world premieres including I Hate Mozart (Vienna, 2006), Kommander Kobayashi 3 (Berlin, 2007), Die Besessenen (Vienna, 2010) and Vogel Herzog Idiot (Vienna, 2011) with Mini-Mono-Opera Heute Abend Boris Godunow by Ucrainian composer Karmella Tsepkolenko. He recently participated in contemporary opera productions like Ujamaa Paradise (Musiktheatertage Wien 2015) and will be performing in the world premiere of two of chamber operas (Hybris and Nemesis) in Fall 2016 in Vienna.

In February 2018 he debuted as Il Malaspina in "Luci mie traditrici" by Salvatore Sciarrino at Ukrainian National Opera Kiev.


He has also performed in operettas as Ollendorf in Millöcker's Bettelstudent, Baron Weps in Zeller's Vogelhändler, Prince Sergej in Kálmán's Zirkusprinzessin and Frank in Fledermaus, which he performed at the Teatro Municipal, Santiago de Chile in 2007 and at the New National Theater Tokyo in 2009 and 2011.


In 2008 he achieved audience and critic’s praise for his role of Zsupán in Gypsy Baron at the Leharfestival Bad Ischl / Upper Austria and sang at Austrian's largest operetta festival in Mörbisch in 2013 and 2014. In 2012 he took part in a concert performance of Lehar's Giuditta with Ulf Schirmer and the Bavarian Radio Symphony Orchestra at Prinzregententheater Munich. In January 2014 he performed the role of Nasoni in Gasparone at Musiktheater Liechtenstein/Balzers and he was with the Theater Baden bei Wien in fall 2015 as well as in summer 2016 . In summer 2017 he was back at Seefestspiele Mörbisch as Baron Weps in "Vogelhändler" by Carl Zeller.

During the last two seasons Tevye in "Fiddler on the Roof" became one his most important roles, which he performed (in german) at Mörbisch Festival 2014 and at Teatro Communale Bolzano/Italy as well as in different concert venues in Boston (in english). His performance as jewish milkman was successful with the audiences and the press call him and "authenic" and "very persuasive Tevye".

Since 1997 he often has been a guest of the Festival 2days2nights of New Music in Odessa/Ucraine and has developed tight relationships with Ucranian musicians performing at festivals in L'viv and Donetsk. As a result a number of Ucranian composers have written for him, he performed these works in Ucraine, Austria and Northamerica. Beyond the operatic stage, Rupert has also presented Lied recitals with contemporary and classic repertoire and previous engagements have brought him to Montréal, Ottawa, Boston, New York, Washington DC and Moscow.
