Bio


Swiss-born conductor Reto Schärli has a very broad repertoire, rooting both in opera and symphonic music. He has a particular passion for slavonic music and unknown rarities mainly of the late-romantic period. Additionally, Mr Schärli is a champion of Swiss composers, including Hermann Suter, Hans Huber and Arthur Honegger.


Reto Schärli was recently chosen as a fellow for the prestigious "Dirigentenforum des Deutschen Musikrats" program tutored by the German Government. In 2016/17 he was principal conductor of the Catholic Student's Orchestra KHG Freiburg (Germany), conducting two performances of Brahms' "A German Requiem". Since 2010, he has closely worked as guest conductor with the Philharmonic Orchestra of Luhansk (Ukraine). He has conducted, among others, the Moscow Philharmonic Orchestra, Orchestra Musikkollegium Winterthur, Festival Strings Lucerne and performed with the orchestras of the state operas in Plovdiv, Rousse (Bulgaria) and Teplice (Czech Republic). He has also directed two concerts with Janacek Philharmonic Orchestra Ostrava and was commissioned to conduct a series of children's concerts with Berner Sinfonieorchester in the seasons 2015/16 and 2016/17.


In summer 2015, he made his debut as opera conductor with an own production of Donizetti's "Viva la mamma" in Überlingen (Germany). In 2013, he conducted the Philharmonic Orchestra Luhansk during the festival "Mammern Classics" on Lake Constance.


Born in 1991, Reto Schärli received his initial musical training in piano, cello, singing and music theory the Conservatory of his home-town Winterthur. He started studying conducting privately with Prof. Liutauras Balciunas, one of the last students of legendary Russian pedagogue Prof. Ilya Musin. Reto Schärli made his professional conducting debut in Ukraine at the age of 19 and started his studies in orchestral conducting at Zurich University of the Arts ZHdK in 2011 (class of Prof. Johannes Schlaefli). He graduated from Zurich University of the Arts with a Master of Arts Degree in 2016. Further education in symphonic, operatic and choir conducting at University of Music and Performing Arts Vienna with Prof. Mark Stringer, Prof. Konrad Leitner and Yuji Yuasa. Currently, he is a private student of Maestro Giuliano Betta at Dreiländereck-Gesangsakademie Lörrach (Conducting and Vocal Coaching).


Reto Schärli has participated in masterclasses led by leading conductors of our time, including David Zinman, Yuri Simonov, Bernard Haitink, Esa-Pekka Salonen and Mikhail Jurowski. The young musician conducted concerts in Czech Republic, Bulgaria, Russia, Lithuania, Ukraine, Switzerland, Germany and Austria.
