Bio

Pavel Yankovsky Baritone   Prize-winner at the Belorussian National Stanisław Moniuszko Competition (2000). Prize-winner at the International Irina Bogacheva Competition (2007). Finalist at the Luciano Pavarotti Competition (Modena, Italy, 2008). Recipient of two Paradise theatre prizes: Nominee for “Best Male Role in Opera” as Robert in the opera Iolanta (2011) and nominee for “Best Male Role in Opera” as Valentin in the opera Faust (2012).   Born in Belarus in 1979. Graduated from the Baranovichi School of Music in choral conducting. Graduated from the preparatory department of the Belorussian State Academy of Music (Minsk, 2001). Graduated from the vocals department of the St Petersburg Rimsky-Korsakov Conservatoire (2006).   From 2004 - 2008 he was a soloist of the Opera and Ballet Theatre of the St Petersburg Conservatoire where he made his debut in the title role in Eugene Onegin. At that theatre he also appeared as Valentin (Faust), Giorgio Germont (La traviata), Robert (Iolanta), Gryaznoi (The Tsar’s Bride) and Karenin (Uspensky’s Anna Karenina). In 2005 he toured as a soloist with the St Petersburg Concert Chorus to Germany, the Netherlands and Belgium.   From 2005 – 2008 he was a soloist with the Mariinsky Academy of Young Singers. During this period he appeared in several of the theatre’s productions, making his debut in the opera Madama Butterfly. Has also taken part in theatre tours together with maestro Valery Gergiev performing the operas Il viaggio a Reims (Kennedy Center, Washington, and Teatro Real, Madrid) and The Love for Three Oranges (Teatro Real, Madrid, and Bunka Kaikan, Tokyo). Has also appeared in Mariinsky Theatre soloists’ concerts. One such concert featured a performance in the Baritones’ Parade featuring leading Mariinsky Theatre baritones (Vladikavkaz, North Ossetia-Alania).   From 2006-2007 he trained at the International Summer Academy in Mikkeli (Finland), studying under Elena Obraztsova, Vladimir Atlantov and Matti Palm. Performed the baritone role in Sergei Rachmaninoff’s cantata Spring at the Great Hall of the St Petersburg State Philharmonic (conducted by Alexander Titov, 2007). Has toured with the Andreyev Orchestra of Russian Folk Instruments to Istanbul (2007). In 2009 he was asked by the composer Sergei Slonimsky to be the first performer of his cycle of romances.   Since 2010 he has been a lead soloist with the one of the largest theatres in the world — Novosibirsk State Academic Opera and Ballet Theatre. Over five seasons there he has sung more then twenty different roles, appearing in over two hundred performances, among them: Rigoletto (Rigoletto),Scarpia (Tosca), Escamillo (Carmen), Germount  (La Traviata),Marcello (La Boheme), Sharpless  (Madama Batterfly), Eugene Onegin (Eugene Onegin),Yeletsky (The Queen Of Spades), Prince Igor (Prince Igor), Gryaznoy (Tsar’s Bride) At the National Academic Bolshoi Opera and Ballet Theatre of Belarus he has performed the role of Prince Igor in the eponymous opera (2012). Has toured with the Novosibirsk State Academic Opera and Ballet Theatre to Thailand (Schaunard in La Boheme, 2010) and South Korea (Prince Igor, 2010).
