Bio

Originally from Modesto, California, Matthew Peña begins 2017/2018 as Marquis de Chateauneuf in Zar und Zimmermann at both the Volkstheater Rostock and Stadttheater Aschaffenburg, and returns to the Staatsoper Berlin as Asle in Nikolaus Brass’s Sommertag, in the newly reopened Werkstaat, and in the German premiere of Sciarrino's Ti Vedo, Ti Sento, Mi Perdo. He also makes his debut with the Çukurova State Symphony Orchestra in Adana, Turkey as the tenor soloist in Beethoven's 9th Symphony.
In 2016/2017 he debuted as Der Student Arkenholz in Reimann’s Die Gespenstersonate with the Festival of New Music at the Staatsoper Berlin - Werkstatt. He also appeared as an American, Gondolier and Hotel Guest in Death in Venice at the Deutsche Oper Berlin, as well as several productions  at Volkstheater Rostock, including Fenton in Falstaff, soloist in Händel's Messiah, Marquis von Chateauneuf in Zar und Zimmermann, as well as several roles in Candide and Paris! Paris!, a musical revue of Jacques Offenbach, and debuted at the Landestheater Coburg as the 4. Knappe in Parsifal.
In 2015/2016 he returned to the Deutsche Oper Berlin for several productions, including 1. Matrose in Vasco da Gama, 1. Geharnister in Die Zauberflöte, Wirt/Tierhändler in Der Rosenkavalier as well as Das Schlaue Füchslein and Salome. He also debuted in Wuppertaler Bühnen as Hoffmann in Der Nachtschreck, an adaptation of Hoffmanns Erzählungen, at Theater Lübeck as the Lehrer in Lady Macbeth of Mzensk and at the Volkstheater Rostock as Soldier/James/Alchemist/Inquisitor/Crook/Old Man in Candide.
In 2014/2015, Matthew debuted as Edmondo in Manon Lescaut at both the Royal Opera House Muscat in Oman, on tour with the Deutsche Oper Berlin and the Palau de les Arts Renia Sofia in Valencia conducted by Plácido Domingo. He also recorded the role with Maestro Domingo, Andrea Bocelli and the Orquestra de la Comunitat Valenciana, released by Decca in 2014. At the Deutsche Oper Berlin, he appeared in productions of Lady Macbeth of Mzensk, L’Amour des Trois Oranges and as Hoffmann in Hoffmann, an adaptation of Offenbach’s Les Contes d’Hoffmann, and returned to the Theater Kiel as the Visitor in a German version of Philip Glass’s In the Penal Colony.
