Bio



Matthew Lutton is a theatre and opera director based in Melbourne. He is currently the Artistic Director and CEO at the Malthouse Theatre, where he recently directed for the company Black Rider: Casting of the Magic Bullets in collaboration with Victorian Opera and Melbourne International Arts Festival. 

In 2018, his production of Picnic at Hanging Rock played at the Barbican in London, after a sell out season at the Royal Lyceum Theatre in Edinburgh in 2017. 

Other recent productions directed at Malthouse Theatre include: The Real and Imagined History of the Elephant Man, Away, Edward 2, Picnic at Hanging Rock, I am a miracle, Night on Bald Mountain, The Bloody Chamber, Dance of Death, Pompeii, L.A., On the Misconception of Oedipus, Die Winterreise, The Trial and Tartuffe. 

Matthew directed Strauss's Elektra in 2012 for Opera Australia and West Australian Opera, Wagner’s The Flying Dutchman in 2013 for New Zealand Opera and Queensland Opera, and Make No Noise in 2011 for the Bavarian State Opera.

Matthew has also directed for many of Australia’s major theatre companies including Sydney Theatre Company, Belvoir Street Theatre, Griffin Theatre Company and Black Swan State Theatre Company, on projects such as The Mysteries: Genesis, The Duel, Love Me Tender, Don’t Say the Words, and The Lady Aoi.
