Bio

Following an international career as a mezzo, Mary Ann Stewart recently began singing soprano repertoire.  She began the 2015-16 season by singing the title role in Tobias Picker’s Thérèse Raquin with Long Beach Opera and Chicago Opera Theater followed by Adriano in Rienzi with The National Philharmonic and the soprano soloist in Faure's Requiem at Carnegie Hall.  Other notable engagements include a “…firm and moving Madame Lidoine” in Dialogues des Carmélites according to Zachary Woolfe of The New York Times with dell’Arte Opera Ensemble as well as the title role in Ariadne auf Naxos, Donna Elvira in Don Giovanni and Lady Macbeth in Macbeth. She has sung Adalgisa in Norma conducted by Yves Abel for her Bilbao Opera (ABAO-OLBE) debut, Miss Jessel in The Turn of the Screw at the Festival de Opera de Tenerife, Brangäne in Tristan und Isolde with Virginia Opera, a series of Verdi concerts with Lyric Opera of Virginia which included excerpts from Macbeth (Lady Macbeth), Un ballo in maschera (Amelia), La forza del destino (Leonora) and Falstaff (Alice), Agathe in Der Freischütz with Utopia Opera, Giovanna Seymour in Anna Bolena and Adriano (cover) in Rienzi with Opera Orchestra of New York, Sixth Flowermaiden in Parsifal, Siegrune in Die Walküre and Idamante in Idomeneo with Washington National Opera, Stéphano in Roméo et Juliette with the Macau Opera Festival as well as Bilbao Opera (ABAO-OLBE), The Secretary in The Consul with Opera Boston, Isolier in Le Comte Ory with the Opéra Royal de Wallonie conducted by Alberto Zedda and Festival de Opera de Tenerife, Urbain in Les Huguenots with Orquesta Sinfónica del Estado de México under the baton of Eve Queler, Old Lady in Candide at the Teatro Argentina in Rome with Euro Festivale Mediterraneo, the title role in Carmen with Opera in the Heights, Hippolyta in A Midsummer Night’s Dream with Opéra de Nice and Rose 3 in Jonathan Sheffer’s Off Broadway premiere of Blood on the Dining Room Floor with the WPA Theater. One of her most thrilling experiences was singing the Opera Angel in Gift of Angels II – The Song of an Angel at Universal Studios Japan in Osaka which she did for three consecutive seasons.   Some highlights of Mary Ann’s concert engagements include Beethoven’s Mass in C at Carnegie Hall, Handel’s Messiah at both Carnegie Hall and Lincoln Center, Beethoven’s Missa Solemnis at Lehigh University, Mozart’s Mass in C Minor at Lincoln Center, Ravel’s Schéhérazade in Salerno, Italy, a Verdi Gala conducted by Eve Queler at Carnegie Hall and Manuel de Falla’s Siete Canciones with Morales Dance Company. She has had the pleasure to work with conductors such as Yves Abel, Josep Caballe-Domenech, Jacques Delacôte, John DeMain, Plácido Domingo, Arthur Fagen, Christopher Fecteau, Heinz Fricke, Steven Jarvi, Peter Mark, John Massaro, Andreas Mitisek, Steven Osgood, Victor Pablo Pérez, Eve Queler, Gil Rose, Alberto Zedda and David Zinman, as well as directors Arnaud Bernard, Kenneth Paul Cazan, Paul-Émile Fourny, Francesca Gilpin, Lillian Groag, Leon Major, John Pascoe, Francesco Torrigiani, Mariusz Treliński and Francesca Zambello. Mary Ann is a grant recipient of The Olga Forrai Foundation.
