Akerwall made his first professional appearances as a conductor with Danish symphony orchestras while still a student in 1989. A remarkable debut with Tivoli Symphony Orchestra, Copenhagen in 1991 gained Martin Akerwall a positive and firm reputation as one of Denmark's most promising talents. Furthermore, he has been awarded with several distinguished Danish prizes. Akerwall began his career at German theaters as solo-rèpetiteur, principal coach and First Conductor before he enjoyed positions as conductor at prominent theatres, such as Bern State Opera in Switzerland, The Royal Danish Theater and The Finnish Opera. His artistic level has been praised by critics as well as by respected artists such as Dimitri Kitajenko, Gian-Carlo Andretta, Martinez Gomez, Michael Schønwandt, Rodion Shchedrin and Henryk Gorecki. Following his earlier career in Germany and, Akerwall has regularly worked with Scandinavian symphony orchestras and appeared in concerts with orchestras in Denmark, Sweden, Finland, USA, France, Singapore, Prague, Germany and Switzerland. Akerwall has a keen interest in - and talent for - the development of young talents in music. He has worked with several youth orchestras in Europe and Asia. Over a period of three year as artistic director of The Tivoli Boys Guard he rebuilt and refined its culture and brought the youngsters to a high artistic level, all while serving as Chief Conductor of the Queen's Royal Life Guards Band.
