Magnus Piontek is currently an ensemble member of Opera Chemnitz.
In the season 2018/19 he is coming back to Semeperoper Dresden for the new production of Arnold Schönberg’s Moses and Aron as Priest under the batton of Alan Gilbert and in the staging of Calixto Bieito. Later in the season he will be working on the new production of Giacomo Meyerbeer’s Les Huguenots as Méru, working together with Alexander Vedernikov and Peter Konwitschny. Also he will work on the renewals of Le Nozze di Figaro as Bartolo and Toch’s Prinzessin auf der Erbse as the King.
In Chemnitz Magnus Piontek is adding significant bass roles to his repertoire like Sarastro and Rocco in the new productions of Die Zauberflöte and Fidelio. Always keeping in touch with the Italian repertoire he will sing Polonio in the new production of Franco Faccio’s Amleto.
The season 2017/18 was dedicated to Richard Wagner. A major step in Magnus Piontek’s career was his well discussed debut of Gurnemanz in Parsifal. Furthermore he made his debut in Wagner’s Ring der Nibelungen as Fasolt in Das Rheingold, Hunding in Die Walküre and he prepared Fafner in Siegfried for the conclusion in season 2018/19.

In the time between Magnus Piontek is keen on keeping to the italian repertoire. In Chemnitz he was on stage in Verdi’s Ballo in Maschera as Samuel Horn.

In season 2016/17 he made his debut in the Wagner-Fach by singing Landgraf Hermann in Tannhäuser, Veit Pogner in Meistersinger and Second Gralsritter in Parsifal. Further roles were Surin in Pique Dame, Timur in Turandot and Bartolo in Le Nozze di Figaro.

Following his debut at the Dresden Semperoper in the roles of Marquis d’Obigny in La Traviata and Saretzki in Jewgeni Onegin in 2015/16, he returned in 2016/17 adding the roles of Gravis and Zermonienmeister in Busoni’s Doktor Faustus and 2. Armored Man in Mozart’s Die Zauberflöte to his repertoire.
The roles of Sparafucile in Rigoletto, Eremit in Der Freischütz and the title role in Rübezahl und der Sackpfeifer von Neiße, Hans Sommer’s recently rediscovered romantic fairytale he sang at theater Gera/Altenburg, where he was an ensemble member in season 2015/16.
In 2015 Piontek sang Baron Ochs in a children’s version of Richard Strauss’s Der Rosenkavalier with the Berlin Philharmonic at the Festspielhaus Baden-Baden, where he sang the role of Sarastro in a children’s version of Mozart’s The Magic Flute in 2013.
Following his debut the season before Magnus Piontek was an ensemble member of Nationaltheater Mannheim during seasons 2013-15, where he developed his Italian repertoire (Pistola in Falstaff, Un frate in Don Carlo, Sagrestano in Tosca). Likewise he sang Zuniga in Carmen, Celio in Love of the three Oranges, Polizeikommissar in Der Rosenkavalier, and Pfleger des Orest in Elektra.
During the 2012/2013 season he made his debut at Nationaltheater Mannheim taking on the roles of Billy Jackrabbit in Puccini’s La fanciulla del West and Deputato in Verdis Don Carlo.
In addition to opera repertoire, Piontek is an active oratorio performer. Performances include: Haydn’s Die Schöpfung, Frank Martin’s In terra pax, Mozart’s and Verdi’s Requiem and Bach’s Johannes-Passion and B Minor Mass. Piontek has worked with conductors Mikhail Agrest, Tomáš Netopil, Felix Bender, Guillermo García Calvo, Dan Ettinger, Florian Helgath, Pietari Inkinen, Johannes Kalitzke, Enno Poppe, Gotthold Schwarz, Alois Seidlmeier und Laurent Wagner, as well as renowned ensembles, among them Akademie für Alte Musik Berlin, Concerto Köln, musikFabrik, Göttinger Symphoniker and Kurpfälzisches Kammerorchester.
Piontek is also well-versed in contemporary classical music. He sang in the world premieres of Adriana Hölszkys Böse Geister in the role of Lebjadkin (conductur: Roland Kluttig; stage director: Joachim Schlömer) and Lucia Ronchetti’s Esame di mezzanotte in the role of Rasorio (conductor: Johannes Kalitzke; stage director: Achim Freyer), both of which were praised by ‚Opernwelt‘. In 2012, he sang the role of Donkey in the world premiere of Echt? by Helmer und Iliopoulos and Voice in world premiere of Neumond by Lucia Ronchetti at „Mannheimer Mozartsommer“.

Following his studies in pedagogy at the „Hochschule für Musik und Tanz Köln“, Piontek studied conducting with Prof. Marcus Creed from 2006 to 2011. During this time, from 2009-2014, he studied voice with Prof. Rudolf Piernay at the „Hochschule für Musik und Darstellende Kunst Mannheim“ and made his debut at Nationaltheater Mannheim.
Awards include: a scholarship from the Richard-Wagner-Verband Heidelberg and the Deutsche Bank Stiftung „Akademie Musiktheater heute“.
Piontek was born in 1985 in Bonn and currently lives in Chemnitz.
