Bio

Mr. Billstrom is educated at Royal Musical Collage in Stockholm. He mainly works as a freelance bass-baritone artist in various operas- and concert productions and he is among other houses seen at Royal Opera in Stockholm and the opera house in Gothenburg. Mr. Billstrom also works as a professional ensemble singer and is a frequent member of the Swedish Radio Choir in a number of productions and tours every year.

As for opera productions he has worked with directors such as Graham Vic, Christof Loy and Ola-Anders Tandberg. In Stockholm at the Royal Opera he sung in the production of Turandot directed by Marco Marelli, and with Nina Stemme and Erika Sunnegårdh as Turandot. Recently playing in Christof Loy’s production of Parsifal with Peter Matei at the Royal Opera, Mr. Billstrom has worked with conductors such as Riccardo Muti, Daniel Harding, Claudio Abbado, Herbert Blomstedt, Marc Minkowski and Laurence Renes, just to mention a few.

Mr. Billstrom is also a sought-after lieder singer at festivals and concert halls as well in Sweden as internationally, like the New York Poetry and Song Festival and at the Oxford Lieder Festival.  He also works internationally in duo with Canadian pianist Ms. Suna Chung. Mr. Billstrom has sung the bass/baritone solo parts in all the great oratories in Sweden as well as abroad and he has a substantial sacral repertoire. Last year Mr. Billström did the role of pastor Brusander in “Kristina från Duvemåla”, the musical by Mr. Benny Anderson and Mr. Björn Ulveus, at the Cirkus arena in Stockholm, together with several concert performances at the Royal Opera. Last summer he sung in Don Giovanni at Drottningholm Court Theater under Marc Minkowski.  You could hear him in Folkoperans production of Turandot where he sang King Timur. Right now he is in the middle of performing Aida at the Royal Opera, and in September 2018 he will sing in Jules Massenets Don Quichotte at Folkoperan in Stockholm.

“I find the combination of opera, doing small- and mid-size roles, and professional choir singing together with various solo concert jobs most developing, demanding that you keep and
maintain high vocal consciousness” says Mr. Billstrom.

In 2014 he was rewarded the prestigious Zorn Prize, and in 2015 the Idun Medal for his work with Beethoven lieder together with pianist Janos Solyom.
