A frequent contest winner, Jean Broekhuizen was a National Semifinalist in the Metropolitan Opera Auditions in New York in 2005, and won the Wisconsin district and has been an Upper Midwest Regional Finalist in that same competition three years in a row (2004-2006).  She was also presented with the Outstanding Mezzo Soprano Award at the Upper Midwest Regionals of the Met Auditions in 2005.  In the spring of 2007, Jean was the recipient of a Study Grant by the Metropolitan Opera National Council Education Fund. Miss Broekhuizen has also been a Semifinalist in the Houston Grand Opera’s Eleanor McCollum Competition (2007), and a finalist in both the Liederkranz Competition (2004), and the Fritz and Lavinia Jensen Foundation Competition for Voice (2005). In 2005, Jean was the recipient of a grant from the Supporters of Opera Singers (SOS) of Wisconsin.

Her 2015-2016 season included performances at the Opera Leipzig as Fenena in NABUCCO and Farzana in Wagner’s DIE FEEN, Hänsel in an abridged version of HÄNSEL UND GRETEL with the Publikumsorchester of the Konzerthaus Berlin, and Dorabella in COSI FAN TUTTE with International Opera Projects in Berlin.  Ms. Broekhuizen was a soloist at the Oper Leipzig (fest singer) from 2008-2015.  Important role debuts in Leipzig included: Oktavian in DER ROSENKAVALIER, Donna Elvira, Hänsel, Fox in Janacek’s CUNNING LITTLE VIXEN, Prince Orlofsky in DIE FLEDERMAUS, and Fenena in NABUCCO.  She also reprised the roles of Rosina and Dorabella, as well as sang roles such as Second Lady in DIE ZAUBERFLÖTE, Zaida in IL TURCO IN ITALIA, Clarice in DIE LIEBE ZU DREI ORANGEN, and Farzana in Wagner’s DIE FEEN, among others.  During the 2014-2015 season in Leipzig, Jean sang the role of Mrs. Otis in the World Premiere of composer Gordon Getty’s opera THE CANTERVILLE GHOST.  She also performed the role of Sièbel in a new production of Gounod’s FAUST.  In addition, she covered the role of Komponist (ARIADNE AUF NAXOS) on Oper Leipzig’s tour to Beijing in October 2014.  As a recitalist, Jean performed two programs as part of Oper Leipzig’s “Musikalischer Salon” series in the spring of 2015.  One entitled “Nun die Schatten dunkel”, with pianist Christian Hornef and violist Immo Schaar, and another entitled “Insula Utopia-von der Sehnsucht mach fernen Länder”, with pianist Alessandro Zuppardo.  During the summer of 2014, Jean sang the role of Fenena in NABUCCO at the Schlossfestspiele Schwerin (Staatsoper Schwerin), in a new production staged by Georg Rootering.  She also recently jumped in as Hänsel at the Theater Magdeburg (2014), as well as at the Landestheater Altenburg-Gera (2009), and as Rosina at the Staatstheater Wiesbaden (2013, 2011).  As a soloist at the Theater Augsburg during the season 2007-2008, Jean debuted the roles of Dorabella in COSI FAN TUTTE, Rosina in IL BARBIERE DI SIVIGLIA and Orfeo in Gluck’s ORFEO ED EURIDICE.  US appearances include the roles of Huntsman and Sorceress in a double-bill of Venus and Adonis/Dido and Aeneas at the Florentine Opera in Milwaukee (2011), and Mother in AMAHL AND THE NIGHT VISITORS with the Little Orchestra Society of New York (2005 and 2006).  Jean received her Bachelor of Music from the University of Arizona, where she studied with Robert Swensen.  After this, she studied at the University of Michigan in Ann Arbor, where she earned her Masters Degree under the tutelage of Shirley Verrett, Freda Herseth and Martin Katz.  As a Professional Studies student at the Manhattan School of Music, Jean studied with Trish McCaffrey, with whom she still continues to work. Her education was furthered as a young artist with the Central City Opera, Chautauqua Opera, Chicago Opera Theater, and Skylight Opera Theater.
