Bio



James Ross studied at Harrow School and Christ Church at Oxford University, taking a doctorate on French opera which was awarded the Sir Donald Tovey Prize. Training first as a violinist and studying singing, he was a 1998 BBC Philharmonic Conducting Competition finalist since then he has conducted over 1,000 works in eighteen countries throughout Asia, Europe, Africa and North America. UK venues include London's Royal Festival Hall, St John’s Smith Square and Westminster Abbey in state occasions for Queen Elizabeth II, Symphony Hall, Birmingham, and Oxford's Sheldonian Theatre, where he conducted Beethoven's 9th Symphony for the 350th anniverary concert.He has performed most symphonic and choral repertoire, and a wide range of operas as a music director and guest conductor, and has proven ability to jump in and work at short notice when available. Works include all symphonies of Beethoven, Brahms, Mendelssohn, Schubert, Schumann and Tchaikovsky, most of Bruckner, Dvořák, Elgar, Mahler, Shostakovich, Sibelius, and major 20th-Century works including by Stravinsky, Bartók and Schoenberg; opera includes Bizet, Britten, Janačék, Mozart, Puccini, Tchaikovsky, Verdi and Wagner. He has conducted much French repertoire and has a strong interest in contemporary music. Numerous first performances include new music concerts in collaboration with the City of London Sinfonia and the UK Arts Council, and at London's Saatchi Gallery with members of the Philharmonia Orchestra. Projects include working on Longborough Festival Opera’s cycle of Wagner’s Der Ring des Nibelungen, leading a tour of 40 musicians to Sri Lanka for the Commonwealth Heads of Government Conference, conducting the first orchestral concert at Colombo’s Nelum Pokuna Theatre, and to Malta in 2015, Uganda in 2017, Turkey in 2018, and guest conducting at the Piccolo Teatro, Milano and for the Center for Contemporary Opera in New York. James Ross is a frequent speaker on music, including at the Bibliothèque Nationale de France and the Purcell School; he has taught at Oxford University and contributed to several books and music journals. He has helped to raise over £1,000,000 through concert-giving for charities, including conducting English National Ballet at the City of London Guildhall at a gala performance in aid of Save The Children and is a director of Ulysses Arts. www.james-ross.com
