Bio

Epitomizing both the vanguard of operatic innovation, as well as depth of experience in the established avenues of her art, Viennese Soprano Isabella Kuëss embodies her passion for both the stage and singing in a diverse breadth of creative life, including as Kate Pinkerton in the first-ever Indian production of Madama Butterfly in Mumbai, as Countess Zedlau in “Wiener Blut” all around Germany, and in the compositional oeuvre of T.W. Adorno, the rediscovery of which she has contributed to through the Akut Verein in Vienna and Berlin.
She performs regularly in both recital and concert on the national and international stage. Recent highlights include her successful debut at the Vienna Musikverein and solo appearances in the Osaka Symphony Hall, Tokyo Opera City, Seoul Arts Center, Philharmonia Podkarpacka Rzeszów, and the Jamshed Bhabha Theatre in the NCPA Mumbai. She has collaborated with noted conductors, including Christian Thielemann, Koon Schoots, and Johannes Wildner, and is a finalist and winner of several international competitions, including 2nd Place in the Oscar Straus Competition, the Kärntner Sparkasse Stipend, and the ISA Scholarship.
Isabella Kuëss has already distinguished herself in performances of core roles of the repertoire, beginning at the age of seventeen as Barbarina in the Jeunesse production of Le nozze di Figaro at the Wiener Konzerthaus and in Graz. Since then she has appeared in and around Austria and Germany as Fiordiligi in Così fan tutte, Mimi in La Bohème, Elettra in Idomeneo, Amarantha in Haydn's La fedeltà premiata, the title role in Lehar's Giuditta, Rosalinde in Strauss' Die Fledermaus, Grisi in Dreimäderlhaus at the Schlossfestspiele Langenlois, and First Lady in Die Zauberflöte at the festival Oper im Steinbruch in St.Margarethen. Other roles include Contessa Almaviva in Le nozze di Figaro, Agathe in Der Freischütz, Micaëla in Carmen, 3. Norn in Götterdämmerung and Lisa in Das Land des Lächelns.
In addition, Ms. Kuëss performs actively in the Lied and Oratorio genres, encompassing an extensive portfolio ranging from Schubert, Brahms, Wagner, Strauss and Berg to works from the Spanish, French and English repertoires, and including solos in Bach's Weihnachts Oratorium, Handel's Messiah, and in works of Beethoven, Verdi, Haydn, Mendelssohn, Mozart, Rossini, and Schubert.
Isabella Kuëss has cultivated her passion for music and drama from an early age, first at the Musikschule Baden, before beginning studies at the Universität für Musik und darstellende Kunst of Vienna at the age of fourteen. Since then, she graduated summa cum laude, studying opera with, among others, Reto Nickler, Christoph Meier, and Beverly Blankenship, Lied and Oratorio with KS Robertus Holl, and in master classes with renowned artists such as Mirella Freni, Cheryl Studer, Roger Vignoles, Norman Shetler, KS Sona Ghazarian, as well as with Ruth Falcon, Gregory Lamar und Bradley Moore in New York. She currently works privately with KS Artur Korn and Heidi Brunner in Vienna.
2017 will see Ms. Kuëss on stage once again as Countess Zedlau in Wiener Blut as well as as Rosalinde in Strauss' Bat. Further projects this year include the mother and witch in Humperdinck's Hänsel and Gretel, and concerts with her LiedDuo and with arteVivo.
