Bio


Praised for a voice with "affecting lyricism” and "a pleasantly warm, spinning light tenor sound," Ian José Ramirez has already established himself as a fine musician and dynamic actor.  During the 2015-2016 season, he joined the opera studio at Opera Stuttgart in Stuttgart, Germany, singing Third Jew in Salome, Smee in Peter Pan (Richard Ayres), Le Remendado in Carmen, and Borsa in Rigoletto.Mr. Ramirez recently completed his tenure as a Resident Artist at Portland Opera, where he sang Second Jew in Salome, Arturo in Lucia di Lammermoor, Man with Old Luggage in Postcard from Morocco, Dr. Blind in Die Fledermaus, Le Remendado in Carmen, and Sellem in The Rake's Progress. Some of his other credits include Don Ramiro in La Cenerentola (CCM Opera), Basilio/Don Curzio in Le nozze di Figaro (Dayton Opera), and Pluto in Orpheus in the Underworld (CCM Opera).Equally at home in recital and on the concert stage, Ian has spent two seasons at the Marlboro Music Festival and has sung with the Oregon Symphony, the Dayton Philharmonic Orchestra, and Musica Sacra of Cincinnati. His repertoire includes Bach’s St. Matthew Passion (arias), Handel's Messiah, Haydn’s Theresienmesse, Mozart’s “Coronation” Mass, and Rossini’s Petite messe solennelle.Mr. Ramirez has received awards from the National Opera Association, the S. Livingston Mather Scholarship Competition, the Orpheus Vocal Competition, and most recently, a Career Opportunity Grant from the Oregon Arts Commission. He has been a Young Artist with Opera Saratoga, Central City Opera, Indianapolis Opera, Dayton Opera, and the Caramoor Music Festival. A native of The Woodlands, Texas, Mr. Ramirez received his bachelor’s degree in music, graduating summa cum laude, as well as his master’s degree from the University of Cincinnati, College-Conservatory of Music.
