Bio


The tenor Hugo Mallet was born in London and first studied singing in his home town with Helena Shenel. After further studies in Rome with Maestro Paolo Silveri, hecame into contact with Maestro Nicolai Gedda, who remained his teacher until 2010. In between he studied at the Royal Northern College of Music with Nick Powell, John Mitchinson and Barbara Robotham. Masterclasses with Alfredo Kraus, Carlo Bergonzi, Brigitte Fassbaender und Hughues Cuenod made it possible for him to develop his personal style.He studied Wagner roles with KS Reiner Goldberg in Berlin.House contracts followed in theatres such as Cologne, Detmold and Freiberg,as well as guest appearances in the Hebbeltheater, Berlin, the State Theaters in Oldenburg and Cottbus, the Grand Théâtre de Dijon and the Opéra de Rouen. Further stations in his career were, among others,Chemnitz, Lübeck, Nordhausen , Würzburg, Ljubljana and Zagreb.    Hugo Mallet has shown his versatility in leading roles such as Les Contes d'Hoffmann(Hoffmann), Andrea Chénier (Andrea Chénier), Lohengrin (Lohengrin) (Bratislava, Slovak National Opera; Zagreb,Croatian National Opera House; Ljubljana , Ljubljana Festival; Augsburg, Theater Augsburg and Würzburg, Mainfrankentheater),Siegfried (Siegfried) (Chinese National Opera, Beijing; Landestheater Linz; Longborough Festival Opera), Werther (Werther), Faust (Faust) and Un ballo in maschera (Riccardo/Gustavo).    As a singer of Lieder, he sang Schubert's, "Die Schöne Müllerin"and "Die Winterreise"with great success in Neuchâtel(CH), in Moscow a programme of russian songs, and in Kofu (Japan) Schumann's "Dichterliebe". He has given concerts in Singapore (The Messiah,B-minor Mass), in the Konzerthaus Berlin (various gala concerts), in the Laeiszhalle in Hamburg (Verdi, Messa da Requiem), in the Rudolf-Oetker-Halle in Bielefeld (CarminaBurana), and is since 2001 every year a guest at the Glocke concert hall in Bremen.    He has not neglected contemporary music either. In Chemnitz he sang Don Ygnacio inthe first german performance of Péter Eötvös'Love and Other Demons, in Berlin, Tristan in Frank Martin's Le vin herbé, and in Paris and Dijon the Prologue and Peter Quint in Benjamin Britten's The Turn of the Screw.    Mallet works with renowned directors and conductors such as Dietrich Hilsdorf, Jean-Claude Auvray, Anthony Negus, Frank Beermann, Christof Loy, Ralf Nürnberger,Dennis Russell Davies, Friedrich Haider, Jeffrey Tate and OswaldSallaberger. He has worked with orchestras such as the Nordwestdeutschen Philharmonie, the Gürzenich-Orchester, the Dortmunder Philharmonikern, the Robert-Schumann-Philharmonie, the Singapore Symphony Orchestra und the Orchestre Léonard de Vinci (now theOrchestre de l'Opéra de Rouen).     He is featured alongside Thomas Quasthoff and Katharina Kammerloher on the CD, "Gioas, Re di Giuda" in the role of Ismaele with the Detmolder Kammerorchester under the baton of Gernot Schmalfuss.  He speaks fluent English, German,French and Italian, and sings also in Russian, Polish Czech and Japanese.
