Bio

The young baritone was born in Inner Mongolia (China), he obtained a Master at the Opera School of the University of Music in Mannheim with Prof. Rudolf Piernay in 2015. Previously, he completed his Diplom at the Hochschule für Musik Franz Liszt Weimar. In October he begins postgraduate studies at the Hochschule für Musik Saar with Prof. Yaron Windmüller. Hongyu Chen did a lots of master classes, among others like KS. Brigitte Fassbaender, KS. Oskar Hillebrandt, KS. Deborah Polaski, KS. Angelika Kirchschlager and Charles Spencer. As a multiple winner of national and international competitions, his artistic career was funded from the Friedrich Ebert Foundation and the Wilhelm Müller Foundation. During his studies he has performed among others at the Frankfurt Opera, Opéra-Théâtre de Metz Métropolethe, Tyrolean Festival Erl, the National Theatre Weimar, Theater Nordhausen and at the Kammeroper Schloss Rheinsberg. He embodied the Silvio in Leoncavallo's "Pagliacci", Orestes in Gluck's "Iphigénie en Tauride", four villains in "Les Contes d'Hoffmann", Falstaff in Verdi's "Falstaff", Roberto in Mozart's "La finta giardiniera", Junius in Britten's "The rape of Lucretia "Argante in Handel's "Rinaldo" and the title role of Figaro in Rossini's "Il Barbiere di Siviglia". His extensive concert activities led Chen in several countries as well as performing with renowned orchestras such as the German State Philharmonic Rhineland-Palatinate, Orchestre national de Lorraine, the Brandenburg State Orchestra, the Prague Philharmonic, the Lautten Compagney Berlin and conductors such as Christian Thielemann, Gustav Kuhn, Helmut Rilling, Heribert Beissel, Wolfgang Katschner and Stefan Sanderling.
