«That such an incredible talent has not reached the ears of a wider audience is truly astonishing. To anyone with even the slightest interest in jazz and opera, Kornstad is a musician who simply must be heard, for there is no one else like him!»
The journal (newcastle, uk) (2018)
«I would not be surprised if Kornstad further insinuates himself in the world of opera and classical music, eventually throwing himself all in. Apparently, he's got the goods.»

Bio

An internationally accomplished jazz tenor saxophonist, Håkon re-discovered singing in New York in 2009 after seeing Cavalleria Rusticana and Pagliacci at the Met. Two years on he was admitted to the Norwegian Opera Academy. He is now combining his newfound tenor voice with his well established tenor saxophone playing in his own ensemble. Their unique sound is best described as an updated Viennese salon orchestra, mixing opera arias, canzone and lieder with Scandinavian jazz.
The album "Tenor Battle" was released in October 2015. He has performed this programme at the Spoleto Music Festival (USA), Rotterdam Operadagen (NL), Wigmore Hall (London, UK), St Martin-in-the-fields (London, UK), Risør Chamber Music Festival (NO) and Oslo Chamber Music Festival (NO), in addition to several music festivals in the European circuit.

Initially studying with American soprano Pamela Kucenic in New York, Håkon finished his master's degree at The Norwegian Opera Academy in Oslo in 2014.

Roles in school productions included Il Podestà in Mozart's La Finta Giardiniera, Lensky in Eugene Onegin, Rodolfo in La Bohème, The title role of Werther, Tamino in Die Zauberflöte and Il Duca di Mantova in Rigoletto. As part of his training he was also singing the role of 3rd Jew in Norwegian National Opera's production of R. Strauss' Salome, directed by Stefan Herheim and conducted by John Helmer Fiore. Furthermore the school production of Così fan tutte was also a Norwegian National Opera production, where he sang the full role of Ferrando, directed by Veselina Manolova and conducted by Gerhard Markson. He jumped in on this role in Helsinki just weeks later, at the Sibelius Academy’s production, directed by Wolfgang Schilly and conducted by Markus Lehtinen.

Håkon Kornstad featured in the contemporary work Adam & Eve— a divine comedy (Cecilie Ore) at the Bergen Festspillene 2015 as well as Ultima Contemporary Music Festival in Oslo, 2015.

"Kornstad sings beautifully, with a clear and open sound. It is remarkable that he should have achieved this level of vocal proficiency in less than five years. (...) Kornstad is on a journey that will take him who-knows-where. But I would not be surprised if Kornstad further insinuates himself in the world of opera and classical music, eventually throwing himself all in. Apparently, he's got the goods."

Post and Courier, Charleston USA

"Håkon Kornstad and his ‘Tenor Battle’ troupe have fashioned a triumphant Bartòk-reversal, the successful re-contextualising of high-end tropes into the folk firmament"

JazzWise (UK)

"It could have been a virtuosic circus act, but in Kornstad’s hands was a musical tour de force."

The Guardian, UK

"That such an incredible talent has not reached the ears of a wider audience is truly astonishing. To anyone with even the slightest interest in jazz and opera, Kornstad is a musician who simply must be heard, for there is no one else like him! A modern legend in jazz? No doubt about it!"
