Bio

Ella Marchment, artistic director of Helios Collective, director of productions at Constella OperaBallet, and part of the steering committee for Operatic Mass Actions (Aarhus, Denmark), has worked on over one hundred opera and theatre productions throughout Europe and produced more than one hundred and fifty events that span opera, ballet, musicals, concerts, theatre, comedy, workshops, club nights, art installations, and masterclass programmes. Her numerous directing credits include Alexander Goehr’s Tryptich at Mariinsky II; an opera–ballet production of Stravinsky’s Renard; an acclaimed international tour of Sir Peter Maxwell Davies’s Eight Songs For A Mad King—described by Opera Now as one of the best productions worldwide in 2014; a new opera-play Hathaway at Copenhagen Opera Festival; Piazzola’s Maria de Buenos Aries; Verdi’s Macbeth and A Masked Ball; Puccini's Il Tabarro at LSO St Luke's; Rossini's Otello and Charpentier's Louise at Buxton Festival; Dido & Belinda (a re-imagining of Purcell’s Dido & Aeneas), King Roger for Channel 4 Random Acts, and a sell-out West End production of An Evening With Lucian Freud, starring Cressida Bonas. Ella is also co-founder of Theatre N16—which promotes new plays and opera adaptations.Ella has been employed by leading arts companies, including the Royal Opera House, Wexford Festival Opera, International Opera, Buxton Festival, The International Opera Awards, Melos Sinfonia, Constella OperaBallet, Bury Court Opera, and Opera Integra. She is committed to solving problems regarding opera’s accessibility and is determined to create professional development opportunities for young artists. Ella particularly enjoys presenting opera with a twist. In 2015 she wrote and directed a play–opera adaptation of Wagner’s Die Meistersinger and also set up a series of Opera Club Nights in London. Thanks to her ability to think outside the box, in 2015 Ella became the first director to receive an International Opera Awards Foundation bursary, and Helios Collective was also awarded this same award in 2016. Her work is currently supported by Arts Council England and The British Council, and in February 2016 Ella received an Artists’ International Development Fund award to complete opera research and development work with Den Jyske Opera (Danish National Opera), furthering her experience as an international director and producer. Ella has also been a board member or provided strategic advice to numerous arts organisations. Future engagements include directing Operatic Mass Actions at The International Living Theatre Festival Aarhus, The International Opera Awards at English National Opera, Mad King Suibhne at Bury Court Opera, Canary Boys with Constella OperaBallet, Rossini’s L’occasione fa il Ladro on tour in Scotland and Italy, and a monologue opera in Tuoro del Lago, Italy.
