Biography

The Icelandic Mezzo-Soprano, Dóra Steinunn Ármannsdóttir, received her classical training at The Reykjavik Academy of Singing and Vocal Arts, and the Opera Department at The University of Music and Performing Arts Vienna.
Dóra made her operatic stage debut at the slender age of 16, at the Icelandic Opera, as The Girl in Stúlkan í vitanum (The Girl in the Tower), an Icelandic Opera by Þorkell Sigurbjörnsson. Dóra also performed and created the Alto-role Elja, in Þorkell Sigurbjörnsson’s Opera called Grettir, performed first at The National Theatre of Iceland, then Bayreuth Young Artists Festival and Betty Oliphant Theatre in Toronto.

In Sydney Dóra sang the title role in Rockdale Opera’s production of Bizet’s Carmen, and Hansel in Humperdinck’s Hansel and Gretel with Pacific Opera Young Artists Program.
Dóra performed the role of Red and Mrs. Clay during the workshop and world premiere of a new opera called Cloudstreet, written by George Palmer, directed by Gale Edwards and conducted by Simon Kenway. Dóra sang in an Open Day Concert and Flood Relief Benefit Concert at the Sydney Opera House in 2011. Next to her solo career she performed
with Opera Australia as a Chorister at the Sydney Opera House and Arts Center Melbourne in their productions of Madama Butterfly, Macbeth, Lakme, La Boheme, The Pearlfishers and La Traviata (Handa Opera on Sydney Harbour).
At Sydney Eisteddfod competitions Dóra won The Evelyn Hall de Izal Mezzo-Soprano Award, the first prize at the Opera Awards and the first prize in Event 15 (Folk Song).

Other performed roles are Maddalena in Verdi’s Rigoletto, Amore in Monteverdi’s L'incoronazione di Poppea, First Witch, Second Witch, and Belinda in Purcell’s Dido and Æneas, Lucy in Menotti’s The Telephone, Barbarina in Mozart’s Le Nozze di Figaro, Despina in Mozart’s Cosi fan tutte, Dritte Knabe in Mozart’s Die Zauberflöte, Helmwige in Wagners Die Walüre, and L’enfant in Ravel’s L’enfant et les sortileges.
Concert repertoire includes Bach’s Johannes Passion, Mozart’s Requiem in D minor, Vivaldi’s Gloria and Fauré's Requiem, Mendelssohn’s Elijah, Mozart’s Exultate Jubilate, Schumann’s Frauenliebe und Leben, Einhorn’s Voices of Light. Dóra toured to Vienna, Prague, Budapest and Krakow with Mitteleuropäisches Kammerorchester singing Mahler’s Kindertotenlieder.
Dóra will perform The Gingerbread Witch in Humperdinck’s Hansel and Gretel with The Icelandic Opera, Premiere November 25
th
2018 at Harpa Concert Hall in Reykjavík.
