American baritone Dean Murphy recently graduated from Yale School of Music’s prestigious opera program with a Master of Music degree. He has been a featured artist with many of New England’s premier opera companies including Opera North, Opera Theater of Connecticut, Salt Marsh Opera, Opera Connecticut, Connecticut Lyric Opera, and Yale Opera. 
This past season, Dean appeared as Marcello in excerpts from La Bohème with the New Haven Chamber Orchestra, as well as Guglielmo in Così fan tutte and Son Ami in Milhaud’s Le pauvre matelot with Yale Opera. He also joined Central City Opera as a Bonfils-Stanton Apprentice Artist. At Central City, he sang the roles of The Herald in Benjamin Britten’s The Burning Fiery Furnace and Pierre la Fitte in Amy Beach's Cabildo. Dean will also cover the roles of Moralès in Carmen and Guglielmo in Così fan tutte. 
During the 2015-2016 season, Dean performed Le Dancaïre in Carmen with Opera Theater of Connecticut, Papageno in The Magic Flute with Salt Marsh Opera, and Figaro in Il Barbiere di Siviglia with Connecticut Lyric Opera. Dean also performed Bob in The Old Maid and the Thief and Willis Parkham in Dan Shore’s comic opera An Embarrassing Position both with Hartford Opera Theater. In the summer of 2015, Dean performed Top in Copland’s The Tender Land with Opera North, where he was part of their Resident Artist Program. With Yale Opera, he performed Demetrius in Benjamin Britten’s A Midsummer Night’s Dream, Danilo in scenes from Die Lustige Witwe, Thibaut d’Arc in scenes from The Maid of Orleans, and Belcore in scenes from L’elisir d’Amore. 
In addition to his residency with Opera North, Dean was a resident artist with Opera Connecticut from 2013-2014, where he performed the roles of Marco in Gianni Schicchi, the title role in Signor Deluso by Pasatieri, and Brighella in Salieri’s The Little Harlequinade. He also performed the roles of Melisso in Alcina with East Coast Chamber Opera, Il Principe Yamadori in Madama Butterfly with Connecticut Lyric Opera, and Peter in Hansel and Gretel with Revolution Opera Alliance. During the summer of 2013, he had the opportunity to cover the role of Belcore in L’elisir d’Amore with Martina Arroyo’s Prelude to Performance Young Artist Program. 
On the concert stage, Dean has performed the iconic baritone solo in Brahms’ Ein deutsches Requiem at St. James’s Episcopal Church along with members of the Hartford Symphony Orchestra in the spring of 2017. Last season, he made his debut with the Salisbury Sinfonietta as the featured bass soloist in Handel’s Messiah and Bach’s Ich bin ein guter Hirt (BWV 85). He has also been featured as the baritone soloist in both Fauré’s Requiem with the Connecticut Virtuosi Chamber Orchestra and Charpentier’s Magnificat with the New Haven Chorale. With the Manchester Symphony Orchestra, he performed as Haman in Handel’s Esther. He has also performed as Jesus in Johannes-Passion by Schütz at Emmanuel Lutheran Church. 
In 2016, Dean was awarded a generous scholarship from the Bel Canto Vocal Scholarship Foundation. In the past, he has received the Lynne Strow Piccolo Award at Opera Connecticut’s American Opera Idol Competition as well as additional accolades from the Amici Vocal Competition, Peter Elvins Vocal Competition, and the Classical Singer Competition. 
In addition to his Master of Music degree from Yale School of Music, Dean holds a Bachelor of Music degree in Vocal Performance from the Hartt School of Music. In the fall of 2017, Dean joins the ensemble of Deutsche Oper Berlin, singing supporting roles in twelve operas throughout the 2017-18 season.
