Bio

After graduating from the Academy of Music in Zagreb, Davorin Brozić pursued further clarinet studies in New York and Geneva, as well as conducting studies in Sienna and Milan. He studied clarinet with Charles Neidich and subsequently with Thomas Friedli as a scholarship student of the Swiss Confederation. During the period spent in Switzerland he played as a soloist in l'Orchestre de chambre de Genève and as a member of the Contrechamps ensemble founded in 1980, where he collaborated with the composers such as Jarrel, Boulez, Hosokawa, Rihm, Benjamin, Holliger, Amy and others.

He thoroughly formed his musical individuality while studying conducting in Siena with Gianluigi Gelmetti and in Milan with Gilberto Serembe. Lately, Brozić has been working as an assistant with the National Opera in Rijeka, both symphonic and operatic repertoire, preparing Bartok's Concerto for Orchestra and the new production of Norma, respectively. In previous seasons he assisted in the production of Tchaikovsky's The Sleeping Beauty in the Croatian National Opera in Zagreb where he also conducted Mahler's cycle Lieder eines fahrenden Gesellen. Besides that, he has conducted the Croatian Chamber Orchestra and Ensemble Cantus in their seasonal concerts.

Davorin Brozić focuses on performing the most valuable of clarinet works, ranging from classics to contemporary. In recent seasons, he has performed at festivals in Italy, Germany, Switzerland and Croatia playing with musicians such as Michael Flaksman, Jose Gallardo, Gernot Suessmuth, Pascal Devoyon, Philippe Graffin, Vladimir Mendelssohn or Eduard Laurel. In several Music Biennale Zagreb festivals he performed alongside some distinguished ensembles, such as the Berlin Philharmonic Quartet, Zeitfluss Ensemble Graz and Croatian Radio Symphony Orchestra when he appeared as a soloist in Kaija Saariaho’s D’om le vrai sens, conducted by Johannes Kalitzke.

Today, his career of a music professional encompasses two main strands: as a performer of music he is a member of the Croatian National Opera Orchestra, while as an assistant professor he also teaches clarinet, orchestral and pedagogy studies at the Academy of Music in Zagreb. Moreover, he is a co-founder and organiser of Diapason, a chamber music festival taking place at the Croatian Institute of Music.
