Greek tenor Christos Kechris balances equally through the lyric repertoire and the Spieltenor repertoire, as well as the very demanding compositions of contemporary music. His musical skills make him a reliable musician and his theatrical education point out a pluralistic performer. Christos doesn’t hesitate to explore new theatrical trends of expression and acting techniques, stage innovation and experimental creativity.
Born in Athens in 1982, Christos first approached classical music at the age of 9 when he started taking classical guitar lessons at the National Conservatory of Athens. Attracted by the performing arts he entered the Faculty of Drama and Theater at the National University of Athens and at the same time he started taking classical singing lessons with the renowned Greek baritone Kostas Paskalis. After graduating from the conservatory (Panos Dimas’ class) he attended masterclasses and courses held by acclaimed artists such as José Cura, Francisco Araiza, Ton Koopman, Dunja Vejzović , Jannette Pilou and Jane Henschel. He has also worked repeatedly with Aris Christofellis, Christina Giannakopoulou, Angelo Simo and Spyros Sakkas. The seasons 2011-2013 he has been resident artist of the Greek National Opera Studio in Athens.
Still student at the conservatory, he made his opera debut singing the leading role in G. Vassilandonakis’ contemporary opera “Dance with me” which world premiered in 2007 at the Greek National Opera. Since then he had frequent engagements at the Greek National Opera. He specializes at the lyric repertoire as well as the repertoire of the character tenor (buffo) and Spieltenor. He has performed Don Ottavio (Don Giovanni), Tamino and Monostatos (Die Zauberflöte), Polidoro (La finta semplice), Conte Eugenio (L’ amante di tutte), Beppe (Pagliacci), Danillo (Die Lustige Witwe), Tanzmeister (Ariadne of Naxos), Jaquino (Fidelio), Goro (Madama Butterfly) and more. He made his debut in Germany in 2013 as Pedrillo in Die Entführung aus den Serail at Theater Celle and in 2014 he debuted in Italy as Medoro in Haydn’s Orlando Paladino at the Teatro Verdi Gorizia.
Christos’ dramatic abilities and musical skills make him well placed to tackle the demanding scores and aesthetics of 20th century. Besides his opera debut, Christos very often studied scores of the standard avant-garde repertoire written by great composers. He has performed Orestes (Oresteia, Iannis Xenakis), Charlie (Mahagonny, Kurt Weill), Der Jasager (Der Jasager, Kurt Weill), Robert (Hin und zurück, P. Hindemith), Orestes (Pylades, G. Kouroupos) and other. He collaborates in a regular basis with acclaimed greek composers performing world premieres and newly written compositions.
Christos’ repertoire also includes song cycles of the romantic german repertoire, french chansons and famous oratorios of the classical and baroque era. In the framework of his interest to the greek music theater, he performs as well various roles of the greek operetta repertoire receiving evenly excellent reviews.
As soloist, he has sung in concerts in France (Nancy), Germany (Amberg), Austria (Bleiburg), Turkey (Istanbul), Slovenia (Brežice), Croatia (Opatija) cooperating with Opéra national de Lorraine, Teatro Verdi Gorizia, Amberger Sinfonieorchester, Theater Celle, Jugendsymphonieorchester Leipzig, Purpur Orchestra, Seviqc Brežice Festival, Borusan İstanbul Philharmonic Orchestra as well as with the biggest greek orchestras and houses such as Camerata-Armonia Atenea, Athens State Orchestra, Greek Radio Symphony Orchestra, Athens City Symphony Orchestra, Greek National Opera, Greek National Theater, Greek Composers Union, Athens Festival, Onassis Cultural Centre and Megaron Music Hall of Athens and Thessaloniki.
His future engagements include among other Beppe in Leoncavallo’s Pagliacci at the Greek National Opera project “suitcase opera”, Pedrillo in Die Entführung aus den Serail and Seemann in Wagner’s Tristan und Isolde at Stadttheater Passau, Germany and Medoro in a new production of Haydn’s Orlando Paladino at Opéra de Lausanne, Opéra de Fribourg and Théâtre Bulle, Switzerland.
