Bio

A seamless union of precise musicality and authentic character portrayal is what makes coloratura soprano Christine Graham a sought-after talent for works of the 20th and 21st century, as well as a versatile performer on the classical operatic stage.  She will make her debut at the Oper Frankfurt in Helmut Lachenmann's avant-garde opera Das Mädchen mit den Schwefelhölzern (The Little Matchstick Girl) in September, 2015. Recently, she sang in The Rake's Progress in conjunction with the renowned Mozart Festival in Würzburg. A fearless actress, Graham impressed audiences with her shocking portrayal of Axinja in Shostakovich’s Lady MacBeth of the Mtsensk District at the Staatsoper in Hannover and became one of a handful of people in the world to play Sierva Maria in Peter Eötvös’  Love and Other Demons at Stadttheater Bremerhaven. For her embodiment of Peter Maxwell Davies’ dramatically complex role Miss Donnithorne at Theater Mönchengladbach she received the title of “Best Up and Coming Singer” from Deutschland Funk. The Tucson, Arizona native began her career in the Opera Studio at the Deutsche Oper am Rhein in Düsseldorf, and went on to make guest appearances in Nordhausen, Mainz, Wiesbaden, Hagen and Ulm, among others. She has worked with prominent conductors such as Jonathan Darlington, John Fiore, Florian Ludwig, Marcus Bosch and Karen Kamensek, and in the productions of renowned directors Robert Lehmeier, Waltraud Lehner, Roman Hovenbitzer, Frank Hilbrich, Andzrej Woron and Christof Loy. Described as “venturing flawlessly to courageous heights” she has sung numerous roles of the coloratura repertoire, including Mozart’s Queen of the Night with the Kammeroper Frankfurt, and Richard Strauss’ Zerbinetta at Landestheater Coburg, for which she received national acclaim. Adding to her "courageous" ways, Ms. Graham has gained a reputation for reliably jumping in for all sorts of roles -- even ones she had never sung before.
