«Christian Damsgaard delivers a remarkably fine performance of the part of the Notary in Paul Schierbeck's Fête Galante.»

«As the matchmaker Goro, Christian Damsgaard seems sneakily and disdainfully to be looking for trouble, showing not the least sign of regret over having attached Butterfly to a dishonourable soldier; vocally he was a good match for the role.»

«As the matchmaker Goro, Christian Damsgaard seems sneakily and disdainfully to be looking for trouble, showing not the least sign of regret over having attached Butterfly to a dishonourable soldier, and vocally he was a very good match for the role.»
DAILY NEWSPAPER INFORMATION, 12 FEBRUARY 2016 (2016)
«Christian Damsgaard sings a fine Goro, suitably restrained in both portrayal and vocalism. He rightly does not stoop to parody, since he is meant to be the Japanese culture’s foil to the Yankee Pinkerton.»

Bio

Christian made his debut at the Royal Danish Opera in 2014 in the role of the mad prince Carlo Gesualdo in the world premiere of Bo Holten’s latest opera Gesualdo-Shadows and the same year at the Danish National Opera in Aarhus, Denmark as Juan in Massenet’s Don Quichotte under the baton of Jérôme Pillement. His warm, flexible voice and a strong musical curiosity has allowed him to perform in a wide and varied array of musical styles and genres with conductors such as Michael Schønwandt, Rafael Frühbeck de Burgos, Nicholas Cleobury, Christian Kluxen, Peter Spissky, Olof Boman, Kjell Seim and Benjamin Bayl.

In the summer of 2015 Christian sang Alfredo in Verdi’s La Traviata at the Copenhagen Opera Festival and later that year he performed in Horisonten, a cross-over performance at The Royal Danish Playhouse directed by Catherine Poher. In the spring of 2016 he added the part of Goro in Puccini’s Madama Butterfly to his repertoire in a touring production by the Danish National Opera. Furthermore he sang the part of Gyldenstjerne in the world premiere of Hugi Gudmundsson and Jakob Weis's Hamlet in Absentia at the Shakespeare Festival at Kronborg Castle and, at the end of this year, the comical part of Arv in Carl Nielsen's Maskarade on tour with the Royal Danish Opera throughout Denmark. In 2017 Christian will sing Nadir in Bizet's Pecheurs de Perles at the annual festival, The Opera Weeks, at the Opera in Krisitianssund in Norway, before returning to Denmark for a revival of Hamlet in Absentia.

On stage Christian has worked with opera directors such as Deda Christina Colonna, Annilees Miskimmon, Stephen Barlow and Elisabeth Linton among others. His talent for musical comedy earned him much acclaim in the part of the servant Arv in Nielsen's Maskarade on cd with Michael Schønwandt and the Danish National Orchestra in 2014 and in the double part as the two old nurses, Arnalta and Nutrice - in full drag - in POPPÆA, a new Danish version of Monteverdi’s L’Incoronazione di Poppea in September 2011 in Copenhagen.

Born in Aarhus, Denmark Christian studied at the Conservatorium van Amsterdam with Udo Reinemann and Margreet Honig. He also has a master’s degree in Musicology and Rhetoric from the University of Aarhus. Since his graduation he has continuously refined his talent with renowned singers and vocal coaches in Denmark and abroad such as Tonny Landy, Ulrich Stærk, Klavs Lewinsky, John Lidal (Oslo) and Gregory Lamar (Berlin).
