Bio

Caroline Mutel began her training as a singer in the maîtrise de Radio-France and as an actress under the tutelage of Antoine Vitez. She then joined the troupe of the Opéra National de Lyon, where she made her solo debuts and was subsequently a regular guest at the operas of Tours, Rennes, Bordeaux, Avignon, and Nice, as well as the Cité de la Musique and the Royal Opera of Versailles. She has also participated in numerous festivals in France and abroad (Chorégies d’Orange, Festival baroque de Lyon, Utrecht, Jesi...) Appreciated for her vocal range and her scenic engagement, she interprets Mozart heroines (Susanna, Ilia, Servilia, Donna Anna, Elettra) as well as those of the grand lyrical repertoire (Micaëla in Bizet’s Carmen, Musetta in Puccini’s La Bohème, Alice Ford in Verdi’s Falstaff, La Voix humaine of Poulenc, or yet the first Flower Maiden in Parsifal). She has sung under the direction of prominent conductors: Louis Langrée, Marc Minkowski, Emmanuel Krivine, Yutaka Sado... and has worked with stage directors such as Laurent Pelly, Alain Garichot, Mireille Laroche, Giorgio Barberio Corsetti... Caroline Mutel also has a passionate interest in Early Music and the baroque aesthetic, in which she has been cultivated by such personalities as Jean-Claude Malgoire (La Grande Écurie et la Chambre du Roy), Hervé Niquet (Le Concert spirituel) with whom she has recorded the Médée of Charpentier (DVD Armide), and also Ottavio Dantone... In parallel to her work as a singing artist, which is currently oriented towards a more dramatic repertoire (Strauss, Wagner, Verdi), Caroline Mutel is an accomplished scenic director having made her debuts in musical theater with Du coq à l’âne (music and shadows from Rameau to Ligeti), Bach=14 (music and circus), original creations (Vêpres à la Vierge of Monteverdi for the Fête des Lumières de Lyon) and in opera with Monteverdi’s Orfeo, two works of Offenbach (Monsieur Chou-fleuri and Pomme d’api), The Fairy Queen and Dido and Æneas of Purcell which will be given again in the up coming season. The productions that she has signed have been given by the operas of Besançon, Reims, Clermont-Ferrand, Massy, and Avignon, as well as the royal opera of Versailles, and have received critical acclaim. She recently recorded two rare works with Les Nouveaux Caractères (Sébastien d’Hérin direction) : Les Surprises de L’Amour of Rameau (Glossa Music) and Scylla et Glaucus of Jean-Marie Leclair (Alpha, previewed for autumn 2015).
