Bio


Austin Gunn made his operatic debut as Vorsinger Zaide with the Scottish Chamber Orchestra conducted by Sir Charles Mackerras in the Edinburgh International Festival. Other notable EIF performances include 1st Tenor Soloist Curlew River and Zweite Lehrbube Die Meistersinger von Nurnberg with the BBC Scottish Symphony Orchestra.

His Scottish Opera debut was covering Don Ottavio Don Giovanni.

His English National Opera debut was as Guest John Cage Dinner Party for ENO MusiCircus, he has worked with ENO in every season since. Other ENO performances include covering Pliable/Superstition/Celestial Voice A Pilgrim's Progress and Dantine The Perfect American, and Gizmo 3 The Way Back Home and Security Guard Between Worlds in preproduction workshops in collaborations between The Barbican, Young Vic and ENO, an ENO Late Shift Recital at the National Portrait Gallery, he is core principal tenor for ENO Baylis Know the Show events as Tamino Magic Flute and Alfredo La Traviata, a member of ENO Opera Squad 2015 and 2016 singing Nanki-Poo The Mikado and Don Ottavio Don Giovanni in schools performances and has appeared as guest soloist with the ENO Community Choir. Austin also completed the ENO artist training programme ENO Operaworks where his roles included Vogelsang Der Schauspieldirektor, Don Ottavio Don Giovanni, Lensky Eugene Onegin, and Grimoaldo Rodelinda.

Other roles include Manager in The Waiter's Revenge by Stephen Oliver and Martin in Zad Moultaka's Hummus, bothe were premiere performances in Portugal as part of the Musica Na Fabrica Festival in Lisbon, Bobby in the world premiere of The Fisherman's Brides by Lucie Treacher in the Tete a Tete Opera Festival, Aubrey Der Vampyre (Rocket Opera), Ottavio Don Giovanni (Rocket Opera), Dormont La Scala di Seta (Rocket Opera), Goffredo Rinaldo (RSAMD), Frederick Pirates of Penzance (Opera Anywhere, Rocket Opera) Nanki-Poo The Mikado (ENO Opera Squad, Opera Anywhere, Rocket Opera), Gastone La Traviata (InterOpera), Bardolfo Falstaff (RSAMD), Middle Son The Vanishing Bridegroom (RSAMD), Don Jose Carmen (Black Cat Opera, Grimsby Philharmonic, Rocket Opera, OperaLab), Tololler Iolanthe (Rocket Opera), Le Doyen Cendrillon (RSAMD), Defendant Trial by Jury (Rocket Opera), Fairfax The Yeoman of the Guard, and he performs extensively in opera galas for Black Cat Opera, Impromptu Opera, InterOpera, Rocket Opera and Opera Anywhere throughout the UK. Concert repertoire includes Verdi Requiem for Crouch End Festival Chorus at Alexandra Palace, Mendelssohn Elijah in London and Bradford, Rossini Petite Messe Solennelle and Stabat Mater, Mozart Requiem in Newcastle, London, Glasgow and Oban, Bach cantata 140 at Aberdeen cathedral, Elgar Dream of Gerontius at Dunblane Cathedral, Bach St John Passion at St John's Smith Square, Bury St Edmunds and Beverley Minster, Bach B Minor Mass in London, Hiawatha's Wedding Feast in Scunthorpe and Northumberland, Mozart Mass in C Minor in Bury St Edmunds, London, Glasgow and Newcastle, Orff Carmina Burana with Leeds Philharmonic Society and Salford Choral Society, Puccini Messa di Gloria at The Sage Gateshead and in Northumberland, Handel Judas Maccabeus for the Lanercost Festival, Handel Solomon in Bradford Cathedral. As a recitalist in 2014-2015 he performed 'Tennyson's Lyricism and the Composer's Response' at the Literary and Philosophical Society, Newcastle, and 'Languorous Ecstasy', a selection of works by Libertine poets, at Hull University and a selection of Victorian and Edwardian medicinal song for the VIP relaunch of The Wellcome Collection in London.Upcoming performances include Spectre in The Spectre's Bride by Dvorak in Switzerland, Handel Messiah and Israel in Egypt in the UK.

Recording and film credits to date include Montague John Cage Dinner Party, Maxwell Davies Solstice of Light, 1st Tenor Soloist Curlew River, Zweite Lehrbube Die Meistersinger von Nurnberg all for BBC Radio 3, a recital of song for American television network PBS, and as the singing voice of a German soldier in the television series 'Band of Brothers' directed by Steven Spielberg and Tom Hanks.
