Bio

The pianist Aurelio Viribay specializes in the accompaniment of singers. He completed his formation in this field with Norman Shetler in Vienna, with Dalton Baldwin in France and with Félix Lavilla in Madrid. Between 1995 and 1997 he worked as vocal coach at the 'Vienna University of Music and Performing Arts' and the 'Konservatorium Wien University', and since 1998 he has been professor at the 'Escuela Superior de Canto de Madrid'. In addition he has collaborated in masterclasses given by Thomas Quasthoff in the 'Mozarteum University Salzburg', Walter Berry in the 'Cartusiana Internationale Sommerakademie Niederösterreich' (Austria), and Teresa Berganza in the 'Escuela Superior de Música Reina Sofía' in Madrid. He has collaborated as official pianist in various singing competitions such as 'Das Schubert Lied' (Vienna), 'Joaquín Rodrigo' of Madrid, 'Francisco Viñas' of Barcelona, 'Julián Gayarre' of Pamplona, 'Jacinto Guerrero' of Madrid and 'International Singing Competition of Bilbao'. He has worked with many singers including Walter Berry, Carlos Álvarez, Aquiles Machado, Alicia Nafé, Ainhoa Arteta, María Bayo, Ángeles Blancas, Nancy Fabiola Herrera, Isabel Rey, Ofelia Sala, Ruth Rosique, Ana María Sánchez, Ana Lucrecia García, Tatiana Melnichenko, Raquel Lojendio, Mercedes Arcuri, Lola Casariego, Saioa Hernández, Pilar Jurado, María Rey-Joly, Cristina Toledo, María Espada, Marta Knörr, Sonia de Munck, Enric Martínez-Castignani, David Alegret, Susana Cordón, Carmen Solís, Ruth Iniesta, Elena Sancho Pereg, Cecilia Lavilla, Arantxa Armentia, Milagros Poblador, José Manuel Montero, Pablo García López, Ana Rodrigo, Svetla Krasteva, Alejandro González del Cerro, Luis Cansino, César San Martín, José Julián Frontal, Carlos Cosías, Luis Dámaso, Alejandro Roy, Miguel Ángel Zapater, Alex Vicens, Sandra Ferró, Arantza Ezenarro, Luis Santana. He has also accompanied instrumentalists such as Asier Polo, Mariana Todorova, Beate Altenburg, Ángel García Jermann and John Stokes, Quartet Assai, Bretón Quartet, 'Vocal Quartet Cavatina', National Choir of Spain and the Choir of the Spanish Radio. He has appeared in most European countries and also in Mexico, Morocco and Japan, performing in venues such as the Musikverein and the Konzerthaus in Vienna, and the 'Accademia Musicale Chigiana' in Siena, as well as in most of the important concert halls and music festivals in Spain. He has taken part in premieres of works by the composers Benet Casablancas, David del Puerto, Jorge Fernández Guerra, Juan Manuel Ruiz, Eduardo Morales-Caso, Miquel Ortega, Bernardino Cerrato, Nobel Sámano, María Luisa Ozaita, Dolores Serrano, Diana Pérez Custodio and María Escribano and has made recordings for RNE, Catalunya Music and RTVE. His discography, on labels like 'Columna Música' and 'Stradivarius', includes "Songs of the Madrid Group" and "Spanish Female Composers of the 20th Century" —both with the mezzo-soprano Marta Knörr—, "Songs" with the soprano Lola Casariego, "Après un rêve" with the tenor Guzmán Hernando, "Indianas" of Guastavino with the 'Vocal Quartet Cavatina' and the first recording of "Retablo on Paul Klee's texts" by Benet Casablancas. Aurelio Viribay obtained his Ph.D. from the University Rey Juan Carlos in Madrid with a thesis on Art Song by the “Group of the Eight” in Madrid.
