Bio

In August 2016, Astrid interprets the title-role in the opera Carmen at the Trentino Music Festival, under the baton of Christopher Larkin from the Washington Opera and staged by the world-acclaimed director David Gately. For this program, Astrid has benefited from a scholarship from the Bureau International Jeunesse.   In 2015, Astrid made her Italian debut in the role of Hänsel (Hänsel und Gretel of Humperdinck) under the guidance of David L. Jackson from the Metropolitan Opera at the Trentino Music Festival in the frame of the Music Academy International. She then performed the part of Hänsel again in the production of the Royal Conservatory of Antwerp at DeSingel in 2016 staged by the actor and director Stany Crets.  In 2015, Astrid also performed the part of La Badessa in Suor Angelica of Puccini under the guidance of Elaine Rinaldi from the Miami Orchestra, with the Music Academy International.    Defauw’s operatic performances include the roles of Grimgerde in Die Walküre in the Norwegian National Opera under the guidance of Magnus Loddgard and the stage direction of Arild Helleland, Cherubino from Le Nozze di Figaro in DeSingel Antwerp under the guidance of Benoît de Leersnyder, Dorabella from Così fan tutte with the Laboratoire Lyrique Nei Stëmmen in Luxembourg, under the guidance of Enza Ferrari from La Scala di Milano, Dido (Dido and Aeneas of Purcell) with the Young Philharmonie Köln, The Mother in La Forêt Bleue of Auber at the Royal Opera of Liège, the First Alto in the contemporary opera The House of the Sleeping Beauties in Antwerpen, in the presence of the composer Kris Defoort.    In 2014, Astrid is invited to sing the part of Alto solo in the Beethoven’s 9th Symphony in the Philharmonie of Cologne and the Philharmonie of Essen, conducted by Volker Hartung.  The same year, Astrid sings the part of the Recitant in La Damoiselle Elue of Debussy, accompanied by the Antwerp Conservatory orchestra and choir, with Mrs Stephanie Friede as the Damoiselle.    Astrid performs as a soloist with the New Philarmonic Orchestra Köln in Germany, at the Cathédrale Saint-Michel in Brussels, for the French Chamber of Commerce in Singapore, at the opera festival Les Envolées Lyriques in France, at the Rotary Club Brücke der Einheit in Berlin, the Rotary Club Brussels Europe, the Brussels Parlament, the Festival Lyrics in France, among others.    Astrid’s passion for baroque music leads her to perform with the New Baroque Times Ensemble in Brussels, and at the Chapelle des Minimes in Brussels, where she explores the repertoire of Bach Cantatas. She also gives recitals with the Belgian pianist and conductor Ayrton Desimpelaere.    Born in Nice, Astrid studied at the Royal Conservatory of Brussels and at the Accademia di Santa Cecilia in Rome, and is currently pursuing her opera training in the Royal Conservatory of Antwerp in the class of the American soprano Stephanie Friede.
