Since her debut with Rosina – Il Barbiere di Sevilla by G. Rossini - at the Bucharest National Opera House, the Romanian mezzo-soprano Antonela Barnat has been a part of the ensemble on that stage until 2014 when she became a freelancer. The continuous development of her vocal range and technique helped her perform the roles of Venus in Wagner’s Tannhäuser and Donna Elvira in W.A. Mozart’s Don Giovanni. Up to that point she overcame the difficulties of roles such as Carmen - Carmen, Bizet; Angelina – La Cenerentola, Rossini; Romeo – I Capuletti ed I Montecchi, Bellini; Cherubin – Le Nozze di Figaro, Dorabella – Cosi fan tutte, Mozart; Siebel – Faust, Gounod; Hänsel – Hänsel und Gretel, Humperdink, etc. and the vocal-symphonic repertoire: Pergolesi, Vivaldi, Händel, Bach, Beethoven, Mozart, Rossini, Delibes, Grieg, Mahler, Bruckner, Dvořak and Bacs.

She has recorded contemporary Romanian works: Missa A. Martoni by L. Bacs, Cântece şi Doine by Alexandra Cherciu, Una volta alla corte del Pincipe by Felicia Donceanu – the latter became part of the Golden National Archive in 2014. In 2010, with the Romanian contemporary opera „Orestia II” by A. Stroe, she had a European tour (Switzerland, France, Germany) and also performed during the Days of March Festival from Russe, Bulgaria. In 2011/2013 she performed in the International George Enescu Festival from Bucharest, Romania, Merope - Enescu’s ‘Oedipe’/ Siegrune - Wagner’s ‘Walküre’.

During the summers of 2014 through 2016, she has been a guest in the Gut Immling Opernfestival – Bavaria, Germany - performing the parts of Mitrena – Motezuma, Vivaldi; Frugola – Il Tabarro, Puccini; Emilia – Othello, Verdi; Nicklaus and die Muse – Hoffmanns Erzählungen, Offenbach and Amastre – Xerxes, Händel; Die Zweite Dame - Zauberflöte, Mozart.
