Originally from Bath (UK), soprano Alice Usher trained at the Wales International Academy of Voice with Dennis O'Neill and Nuccia Focile. At Trinity Laban Conservatoire, where she studied with Alison Wells, she was awarded the prize for highest mark in the MMus degree. Prior to her vocal studies, she was awarded a BA in English literature with a choral scholarship at St Catharine’s College, Cambridge. 
Recently, Alice stepped in at short notice to play La Contessa in Le nozze di Figaro with Bloomsbury Opera in London. Previous operatic experience includes Fortuna in L'incoronazione di Poppea in Trinity Laban's summer opera and Miss Jessel in Britten's The Turn of the Screw in Opera Scenes at Trinity Laban. Alice also sang Kate Pinkerton/chorus in Madama Butterfly with Bury Court Opera/Southbank Sinfonia in Ischia and Anghiari, Italy. In July 2016, Alice played Sarah in the newly-commissioned opera Banished (Stephen McNeff) at Blackheath Halls, directed by Elaine Kidd and conducted by Jessica Cottis.
Alice's previous work includes devising and singing in the student-led project Frauenliebe und -leben: A chamber opera, and performing the roles of Tatyana in Eugene Onegin and Donna Elvira in Don Giovanni in Opera Scenes at Trinity Laban. She also sang the role of Monica The Medium (Menotti) in August 2015 and Ottavia L’incoronazione di Poppea (Monteverdi) with Woodhouse Opera in May 2015. Other roles performed in opera scenes include Alice Ford Falstaff (Verdi), Ursula Mathis der Maler(Hindemith), Contessa Le nozze di Figaro (Mozart), Ann Trulove The Rake’s Progress (Stravinsky), and Fiordiligi Cosi fan tutte (Mozart).
She has sung in masterclasses with Dame Kiri Te Kanawa, Rosemary Joshua, Brigitte Fassbaender at Wigmore Hall, Malcolm Martineau, David Gowland, Susan Bullock, Katharine Harries, Mark Shanahan, Dame Anne Evans, and Jonathan Miller.
Alice is an experienced opera chorus member, most recently having sung with the chorus of Opera de Baugé in Lucia di Lammermoor and La clemenza di Tito. She rejoined the chorus of Bury Court Opera for Cosi fan tutte in spring 2017, having performed Madama Butterfly with Bury Court Opera in March 2016. Other chorus experience includes Orfeo (Monteverdi) and Cosi fan tutte (Mozart) with Hampstead Garden Opera, Suor Angelica (Puccini) with The Beethoven Ensemble in Cambridge, Ariodante (Handel) with Cambridge Handel Opera Group and The Mikado with Welsh National Youth Opera.
Alice sings as a professional member of the choir of Methodist Central Hall, Westminster. She is a professional member of the soprano section as part of the Philharmonia Chorus student scheme, performing regularly in the Royal Albert Hall, Royal Festival Hall and other prestigious venues. In the past she also sang with the National Youth Choir of Great Britain.
Solo oratorio includes Ein Deutsches Requiem (Brahms), Ode to St Cecilia (Handel), In terra pax (Finzi), Te Deum (Teixeira), and Missa Romana (Pergolesi). In 2013, Alice was featured on BBC Radio 3 as soprano soloist in the Missa Mirabilis by Stephen Hough, with the BBC Symphony Orchestra and Chorus, conducted by David Robertson.
