ALGIRDAS BAGDONAVIČIUS, countertenor, singing teacher


Date of birth: 10th of July 1977
Education:

2001 – 2009 m. studied solo singing under Professor Vytautas Juozapaitis at the
Lithuanian Music and Theatre Academy (has a diploma of Licentiate of Arts).

Professional activity:

• In 2005 and 2006 participated in summer festivals „Oper Oder Spree“ (Germany).
• At the 30th of April 2006 made a scenic debut in the role of Pilėnietis in V.Klova‘s opera „Pilėnai“ at the 50 year anniversary‘s performance of the Lithuanian
Opera Company of Chicago.
• Since 2006 is a soloist of Panevėžys Music Theatre.
• Since 2007 is a guest soloist of Klaipėda State Music Theatre.
• Since 2009 is a teacher of Solo Singing in the Faculty of Arts of the Vilnius University of Applied Sciences, specialty of Music Theatre.
• Finalist of the Lithuanian singing TV show & contest "Triumphal arch 2010".
• Since 2010 he sings as a countertenor (alto).
• On the 27 of November 2011 has won a 2nd prize of V International Chamber Singers Competition "Beatričė" in Vilnius.
• Since 2012 is a soloist of the Baltic Chamber Opera Theater.
• Since 2013 became a member of the Lithuanian Musicians' Union.
• In 2013 was granted the Status of Art Creator of Lithuania.
• Since 2014 is a member of the international early music ensemble Canto Fiorito.

• Since 2017 is a soloist of the Lithuanian Baroque Opera Theater.


Vocal qualities:

Algirdas Bagdonavičius’ type of the voice is a low countertenor, corresponding
to feminine contralto. The main vocal qualities are the agility and
flexibility, combined with a big power and volume of the voice, a bright, clear
and masculine timbre.

Those qualities enable to perform impressively such heroic roles as
G.F.Händel’s Orlando, Giulio Cesare, Rinaldo (HWV 7b, 1731 version), Didymus,
Athamas, A.Vivaldi’s Ruggiero, Ozias, C.Monteverdi’s Ottone and other. Also his
voice suits to perform the Alto parts in sacred music pieces as oratorios,
cantatas, masses, etc. Countertenor also performs the music of the XX Century
and Contemporary music, as for example comic aria “Olim lacus colueram” from
C.Orff’s Carmina burana, which has brought him a big success, or Oberon’s role
from the B.Britten’s A Midsummer Night’s Dream.
Algirdas Bagdonavičius has performed a key role
of Gao Lishi in five premiere performances of the opera Yang Guifei – the
Concubine of Kaiser (Yang Guifei - Die Konkubine des Kaisers) of the very
talented composer of younger generation Yijie Wang (Forum der Hochschule für
Musik und Theater Hamburg, 2014), and received critical acclaim.


Progress.
Soloist constantly attends the vocal master
classes. Over the last five years he studied under the renowned European
Professors: 
Andris Veismanis, Andis Petersons
(Latvia), Barbro Marklund-Petersone (Sweden, Norway), Mona Julsrud (Norway),
Buddug Verona-James, Derek Barnes, David Gowland, Laura Sarti (United Kingdom),
Vladimiras Prudnikovas (Lithuania), Raminta Lampsatis (Germany, Lithuania),
Mark Tucker (United Kingdom, Germany), Alessandro Pagliazzi, Roberto Balconi (Italy).


Concert activity. 
Soloist has a big performing experience of
various musical epochs and genres. He constantly sings in various concerts and
performances, TV shows. His repertoire is very diverse - from the Medieval to
the Contemporary music, but mostly concentrates on the Baroque music
performance (operatic, chamber and sacred music repertoire).
Algirdas Bagdonavičius is
performing with various early music ensembles and opera troupes – he sung in
the concerts with such a renowned names as Le
Poème Harmonique, Barokkanerne, Norwegian Cornett & Sackbuts, Musica
Antiqua Salzburg, Andrew Lawrence-King, Maria Christina Kiehr, Justus Frantz, Canto
Fiorito, as well as with the Lithuanian early music ensembles Affectus,
Arcadia Consort, Chordos, Concertino luminoso, etc.
