«Munich, 16. 04. 2009 I have come to appreciate Alexandre Myrat’s remarkable talent as an orchestra leader and conductor at several ECM productions featuring Eleni Karaindrou’s pieces, including recordings of the “Elegy of the Uprooting,“ a concert performance overview of the Greek composer’s pieces, as well as “Dust of Time,“ which is the music of the film with the same name by director Theo Angelopoulos. Furthermore, the artist has a vivacious and confident presence as a concert conductor on stage. Mister Myrat has a vast knowledge of orchestra standard repertoires, approaches a wide variety of projects with openness and delicacy, especially – as in the case of Eleni Karaindrous‘ music – those in which, for instance, a folkloric element is at play. As a performer, Alexandre Myrat has creative ideas which he is able to transmit to his orchestra with the help of a precise impact technique in the context of efficiently planned rehearsals. His education and charming personality have made a real conductor out of Alexandre Myrat, who I warmly recommend to any fine orchestra. Best regards, Manfred Eicher»

Bio

Principal guest conductor of La Filarmonica Targu - Mures – Romania Artistic Director of the Thessaloniki State Symphony Orchestra (2011-2014) Founder of the Kamerata- Athens Mégaron Orchestra (1991) Founder of the Orchestre régional de Picardie (1983) In January 2013, Alexandre Myrat was named as Officier dans l'Ordre des Arts et Lettres. Alexandre Myrat was born in Volos (Greece). He discovered music at the age of thirteen, and conducted his first concert seven years later (MIDEM classique, Cannes 1970, Orchestre de Monte –Carlo, soliste Henryk Szeryng). He studied in Paris with Igor Markevitch, Max Deutsch and Nadia Boulanger, who described him as ‘born to conduct’. After the first hearing of Darius Milhaud’s l’Orestie which he conducted for Radio-France in 1976, Alexandre Myrat embarked upon an international career which has lead him to France, Belgium, the Netherlands, Great Britain, Italy, Spain, Yugoslavia, Bulgaria, Germany, Greece and Korea, to name a few. In the same year he was also a prizewinner at the Gino Marinuzzi competition in San Remo. Having become a French citizen in 1977, Alexandre Myrat regularly collaborates with the orchestra of Radio-France, conducting them in recordings, concerts, various premieres (as seen in the archives of the INA), in addition to the memorable world premiere of the symphony ‘La journée de l’existance’ by Ivan Wyschnegradsky in 1978, where he conducted the Nouvel Orchestre Philharmonique de Radio-France, in the presence of the composer. This live concert, edited onto CD by Shiiin in collaboration with the INA, was welcomed with rave reviews and a ‘Diapason d’Or’, which Alexandre Myrat added to his collection of awards received for his EMI and AUVIDIS recordings. In 1984, he founded Le Sinfonietta – Orchestre regional de Picardie, where he was Artistic Director until 1989. It was during this period that he became known for his interpretation of the works of Mozart. In addition, he has been invited as guest conductor to many ensembles, including the Orchestre national de Belgique, the Orchestre symphonique de Liège, the Norwegian Chamber orchestra, the London Mozart Players and the English Chamber Orchestra. He has released several recordings for the BBC, and conducted the Edinburgh Youth Orchestra for three consecutive years, with whom he was awarded the prizes of ‘Best Orchestra’ and ‘Best Recording’ in the international competition of Vienna. In 1991, he established regular collaborations with the Athens Megaron, and founded La Kamerata. Under the talented direction of Alexandre Myrat, the Kamerata became the first Greek orchestra to gain international renown. He has also collaborated with them in various operas. During the twenty years since its formation, for which Myrat has remained the resident director, the ensemble has released various recordings, including: • For EMI – Le Retour d’Ulysse, opera by Thanos Mikroutsikos (presented at the Opera de Montpellier / Festival de Radio-France and at the Mai musical Florentin) • For ARTION RECORD – Prokofiev’s Peter and the Wolf, Saint-Saëns’ Le Carnaval des animaux • For BLUE NOTE – Music Stories (Thanos Mikroutsikos / Gary Burton) • For AGORA – a series of recordings of Mozart with the Kammerorchester Pforzheim They also undertook a tour of Spain with Mstislav Rostropovitch. In 2003, he participated in the Athens Festival and opened the Festival Celibidache in Münich with soloist Ida Haendel. In 2004, he conducted all the important concerts linked with the Olympic Games in Athens. In June of the same year, upon the proposition of Mr Renaud Donnedieu de Vabres, Ministre de la Culture, Alexandre Myrat received the title ‘Chevalier dans l’ordre des Arts et Lettres’. During the 2005/2007 seasons, he was the principle guest conductor of the Patras Orchestra as part of ‘Patras 2006: European Capitol of Culture’. He conducted the Greek premiere of Stravinsky’s ‘Des Noces’ with the SWR Vokalensemble (Megaron novembre 2006). Alexandre Myrat has been a member of the executive staff of the Académie Lyrique de Vendôme since 2006, and the principle guest conductor of the Targu–Mures Philharmonic Orchestra since 2008. In 2011 he was named as Artistic Director of the Thessaloniki State Symphony Orchestra. Taking inspiration from his considerable experience with French orchestras, Alexandre Myrat brings a new approach to this orchestra of 120 musicians, focusing not only on musical excellence but also on bringing classical music to a wider audience. Building on the TSSO’s excellent reputation, established thanks to its quality and its prestigious past, he endeavors to constantly bring something new to the table and introduce new, younger audiences to the world of classical music.alexandremyrat@gmail.com
