Born in Saint Petersburg, Russia in 1971, Alexander Vassiliev studied singing (with Prof. Yevgeny Nesterenko) and composition at the Tchaikovsky Conservatoire in Moscow, before joining the Opera Studio of the Bavarian State Opera in Munich. Thereafter, he was engaged at the opera houses of Freiburg, Braunschweig and Cologne, where he sang Bottom (A Midsummer Night's Dream/Britten), Alidoro and Don Basilio (Rossini), Méphisto (Gounod), The Waterspirit(Rusalka/Dvorak), Kaspar (Der Freischütz), Figaro and Leporello (Mozart), Ramfis and Camillo(German premiere of Boesmans’ „Wintermärchen“).

His future projects include the Prison Governor in the new production of Janacek’s „From the House of the Dead“ staged by Krzysztof Warlikowski at the Royal Opera House in London, at the Théâtre de La Monnaie in Brussels and at the Opéra National de Lyon, Golaud in „Pelléas et Mélisande“ (Cover) at the Glyndebourne Festival Opera, Skomoroch and 3rd Shipman in Rimsky-Korsakov‘s „The Tale of the Tsar Saltan“ staged by Dmitri Tcherniakov at La Monnaie, Bruckner‘s Te Deum under Hartmut Haenchen at the Palais des Beaux-Arts in Brussels as well as recitals in Freiburg and Staufen.

Vassiliev’s career led him to La Scala in Milan (Der Einarmige/„Die Frau ohne Schatten“), theRoyal Opera House in London (Pan Golova/„Tsarina’s Slippers“/Tchaikovsky), Teatro Colónin Buenos Aires (Le Bailli/„Werther“), Opéra National de Paris and Teatro Real de Madrid(Priest/„Lady Macbeth of Mtsensk“). He sang Méphistophélès (Berlioz) at the Esplanade Concert Hall in Singapore as well as in Ravel’s „L’enfant et les sortilèges“, Zemlinsky’s „Der König Kandaules“ and Schreker’s „Der ferne Klang“ at the Concertgebouw in Amsterdam. In 2013, he won the 1st Prize at the I International Singing Competition „Opera de Tenerife“.

Vassiliev sang regularly at the Grand Théâtre de Genève (e.g. Bartolo/Le Nozze di Figaro,Colline, Biterolf, Forester/Cunning Little Vixen), at the Théâtre de La Monnaie in Brussels (e.g.Old Servant/Demon, Rubinstein, Old Gypsy/Aleko) and at De Nationale Opera in Amsterdam (e.g. Priest/Cunning Little Vixen, Priest/Lady Macbeth of Mtsensk, Farfarello/Love for the Three Oranges). He also performed at the Mariinsky-Theatre in Saint Petersburg (Figaro/Mozart), at the Munich Opera Festival, in Düsseldorf, Paris, Nancy, Montpellier, Cagliari, Bologna. He sang Bluebeard (Bartok) at the Festival d’Ile de France, Don Pasquale inCaën, Colline in Rome, as well as Filippo II, Don Pizarro and the title role in Enescu’s„Oedipe“ in Bielefeld. He has worked with such renowned stage directors as Willy Decker, Robert Carsen, Laurent Pelly, Andreas Homoki, Achim Freyer, Richard Jones, Claus Guth, Pierre Audi, and with conductors like Mariss Jansons, James Conlon, Ivor Bolton, Armin Jordan, Jiri Belohlavek, Daniele Gatti, Charles Dutoit.

Vassiliev’s recent engagements include Gurnemanz in Lübeck, Filippo II in „Don Carlo“ andGeneral Jepantchin in the acclaimed world premiere of Mieczyslaw Weinberg’s „The Idiot“ in Mannheim, Gremin (Eugene Onegin), Il Commendatore (Don Giovanni) and Priest/Badger (The Cunning Little Vixen) at the Glyndebourne Festival, Pistola (Falstaff) at the Royal Opera Copenhagen, Fasolt at the Oper Halle, Polkan (The Golden Cockerel) and Priest/Badger at La Monnaie, Bartok’s Bluebeard at the International Chamber Opera Festival in Saint Petersburg as well as 5th Jew (Salome) at De Nationale Opera in Amsterdam and at the Verbier Festival. He sang Shostakovitch’s 14th Symphony with the Bournemouth Symphony Orchestra and the Kammerakademie Potsdam, Othmar Schoeck’s „Elegie“ and Dvorak’s „The Spectre‘s Bride“with the Bergische Symphoniker, Mendelssohn’s „Paulus“ at the Herkulessaal in Munich,Verdi-Requiem in the Verdi-Year 2013 with the Orchestra laVerdi in Milan, Rachmaninov’s„The Bells“ at the Philharmonie Essen, Satan in César Franck’s „Les Béatitudes“ in Speyer andBruckner’s Mass No.3 in Singapore (Esplanade).

Vassiliev is regularly engaged for concert work and has sung with Helmut Rilling, Enoch zu Guttenberg, Rolf Beck and Christoph Spering. He performed at the Beethoven Festival in Krakow, at the Palao de la Musica Catalana in Barcelona and in the Philharmonies of Cologne and Strasbourg, in works like Verdi's Requiem, Mozart’s Requiem, Beethoven’s „Christus am Oelberge“, Bach’s St. Matthew Passion, Janacek’s Glagolite Mass and Shostakovich’s 14th Symphony. He also sang numerous recitals - at the Grand Théâtre of Geneva, the Concertgebouw in Amsterdam, at Schloss Elmau, the Oetker-Halle in Bielefeld, at the Festivals of Davos, Lockenhaus and Citta di Castello as well as at the Mayfest (Ithaca, NY) and at the Albert Konzerte Freiburg.

Vassiliev was the co-founder and artistic director of the chamber music festival „Klassikfest Kaiserstuhl“ in Ihringen from 2008 to 2010. He also initiated the first ever recording of thecomplete songs by Rudi Stephan, which was released on CD in 2012 at MDG and has received very positive reviews in the international music press.
